Manager, Back Office & Payment Operations

Brex

Salt Lake City, UT • Hybrid

Full-time

Re-posted 11 days ago

Job description

Banking Operations at Brex
Operations is the backbone of Brex's mission to power businesses through our Intelligent Finance Platform. We own credit, fraud, money movement, and payments, protecting our customers and our company. From product operations that ensure flawless launches to scalable systems that drive innovation and precision, we operate at the intersection of product, design, engineering, and customer success. If you want to work at the heart of the business, Operations is where you belong.

What you'll do

As a Manager, Banking Operations at Brex, you'll lead a team at the center of how money moves through the platform. You'll coach analysts, strengthen judgment and documentation standards, and build the operating rhythms that keep a high-stakes monitoring function accurate, resilient, and ready to scale. Operations sits at the heart of Brex, owning money movement and partnering across product, engineering, compliance, and customer-facing teams to deliver with speed and precision.

In this role, you'll oversee payment monitoring across Fedwire, SWIFT, ACH, checks, and stablecoins, guiding your team through exceptions, escalations, and complex decisions in real time. You'll shape people, process, and technology: developing talent, improving onboarding, strengthening controls, and turning frontline insight into better workflows. If you're excited by leading great people, solving hard operational problems, and building systems that help Brex move faster without compromising quality or compliance, this is a high-impact role with real room to shape how Banking Operations scales.
Where you'll work

This role will be based in our Salt Lake City office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Banking Operations analysts by setting priorities, coaching performance, and building a high-accountability culture grounded in sound judgment, accuracy, and strong documentation standards.
  • Oversee payment monitoring across Fedwire, SWIFT, ACH, checks, and stablecoins, ensuring alerts, exceptions, and escalations are reviewed on time and resolved with clear, risk-based decisions.
  • Build scalable operating frameworks for onboarding, quality assurance, escalation management, and coverage planning that improve consistency as the team and business grow.
  • Advance Brex's AI-native goals by identifying high-impact use cases, driving thoughtful AI adoption across the team, and partnering on tools and workflows that improve speed, quality, and control.
  • Partner closely with Compliance, Legal, Product, Engineering, and external banking partners to strengthen controls, resolve issues quickly, and support operational readiness for new workflows and product changes.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying root causes, refining procedures, and advancing automation that increases throughput without compromising control quality.
  • Translate frontline insights into clear reporting and actionable recommendations for leadership, surfacing trends, risks, and process gaps that matter to the broader Banking Operations strategy.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in US banking operations, payments operations, compliance operations, or a related function within a bank, fintech, or other regulated financial services environment.
  • 2+ years of people management experience, with a track record of coaching employees, raising performance, and building strong, accountable teams.
  • Working knowledge of high-risk money movement workflows and payment rails such as wires, ACH, checks, SWIFT, or similar transaction monitoring and exception management environments.
  • Practical fluency with AI tools such as Claude, Hex, Granola, and Glean, with a strong point of view on where AI can improve team effectiveness, decision quality, and operational scale in a control-heavy environment.
  • Strong judgment, including the ability to assess risk, make sound escalation decisions, and maintain clear, audit-ready documentation.
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally with teams such as Compliance, Legal, Product, Engineering, Treasury, Finance, or external banking partners to resolve issues and improve processes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn operational complexity into concise guidance, actionable feedback, and leadership-ready updates.
  • A builder mindset with strong operational discipline and the ability to improve workflows, strengthen procedures, and use data or automation to scale quality and efficiency.

Bonus points

These are a plus, not a requirement. If you meet most of the qualifications above, we'd still encourage you to apply.

  • Series 7 and 63
  • Series 24
  • Accredited ACH Professional (AAP)
  • Accredited Payments Professional (APRP)
  • Experience supporting multi-rail payment operations such as wires, ACH, checks, SWIFT, stablecoins, money market trading, or settlement workflows.
  • Familiarity with AML, sanctions, fraud, or transaction monitoring programs in a regulated financial environment.
  • Comfort using data, dashboards, SQL, Excel, or AI tools to identify trends, improve decision-making, or automate manual work.
  • Experience using AI copilots or LLM-based tools to streamline operational workflows such as SOP drafting, exception analysis, QA reviews, reporting, or incident response.
  • Strong judgment around AI adoption, including when to use human review, how to validate outputs, and how to apply AI responsibly in a control-heavy environment.
  • Experience leading through audits, incidents, regulatory exams, or high-severity operational escalations.
  • Exposure to working with external banking partners, vendors, or fintech infrastructure providers to improve operational workflows and controls.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is USD $105,600 - $132,000.  However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
