Product Engineer Assistant information

What does a product engineer assistant do?

A Product Engineer Assistant supports product engineers in the design, development, testing, and improvement of products. They often help with creating technical documentation, preparing prototypes, conducting tests, and collecting data. Their role is crucial in ensuring that products meet quality standards and project requirements. They also assist with coordinating between engineering teams and other departments to facilitate smooth workflow and communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product engineer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Engineer Assistant, you need a strong background in engineering principles, technical drawing, and basic product development, often supported by a relevant associate degree or coursework. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and data analysis tools is typically required. Organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure accurate technical support, efficient workflow, and high-quality product outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by product engineer assistants when working on cross-functional teams?

Product Engineer Assistants often collaborate with engineers, designers, and project managers, which can present challenges like managing diverse communication styles and balancing competing priorities. Navigating differing perspectives while ensuring deadlines are met requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Proactively seeking clarification, staying organized, and building positive working relationships can help overcome these challenges and ensure successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Product Engineer Assistant vs Product Engineer?

Your Role in Our Mission

  • Agile Team Technical Coordination: Coordinate the technical work of a cross-functional Agile development team as its most senior technical contributor. Guide sprint execution, facilitate backlog refinement, remove technical bottlenecks, and sustain a consistent and effective development cadence.
  • Product Mastery & Technical Health: Establish deep, system-level command of the on-market SmartDrive platform and own its ongoing technical health. Early in the role, strengthen product reliability and performance by driving design changes and resolving engineering issues — building the foundation from which you will lead next-generation development.
Technical Strategy & System Architecture: Define and drive system-level architecture and technical strategy for power-assist products. Ensure cohesive integration across hardware, software, and mechanical systems while aligning with product goals, safety requirements, and the long-term roadmap.
  • Technical Backlog Management & Planning: Own the integrity of the technical backlog. Work closely with Product Management to translate product requirements into well-defined technical tasks and user stories, and ensure design inputs are ready to support efficient development.
  • Technical Decision-Making & Problem Solving: Drive the team's technical decision-making. Resolve complex engineering challenges, evaluate trade-offs across performance, safety, cost, and timeline, and make timely decisions — from urgent product and field issues today to architectural direction over time. Escalate critical risks when necessary.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination & Integration: Facilitate collaboration across engineering disciplines and stakeholder groups — R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Supply Chain, and Product Management.
  • System-Level Planning & Execution: Support system-level planning including design documentation, change control, and development processes. Ensure structured execution across all phases, from requirements definition and verification through design transfer.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Provide regular updates to leadership on technical progress, risks, and decisions. Act as the technical representative of the team, ensuring alignment between engineering execution and organizational priorities.
  • Technical Mentorship & Continuous Improvement: Mentor engineers and promote best practices across the team. Identify process gaps and drive improvements in Agile execution, quality workflows, and development efficiency, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and engineering excellence.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years of product development experience, with a strong track record of leading complex technical projects from concept to production.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in at least one core engineering discipline (software, electrical, or mechanical) with strong system-level understanding. Experience integrating multi-disciplinary systems is required.
  • Product Development & Quality: Experience with structured product development and quality-system processes, including requirements, design reviews, verification, change control, risk management, and corrective action. Familiarity with regulated environments is preferred.
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills. Ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority, clearly communicate technical concepts, and drive alignment across stakeholders.
