SUMMARY
This Staff R&D Materials Chemist Engineer provides the opportunity to develop new materials, concepts and products for orthodontics. This person will be expected to interface with employees at all levels in various departments, including R&D, Operations, Quality Assurance, Technical Services, Regulatory Affairs, and Procurement. Major Responsibilities: 1) Hypothesize and develop materials formulations 2) perform chemical, physical, and mechanical property testing. 3) Conduct scientific research with objectivity and integrity. 4) Evaluation of chemical/materials technologies and reporting. 5) Support product development, operations, and sustaining teams.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Define, develop and test new adhesive formulations based upon glass/resin composite mixtures.
  • Prepare solutions, compounds, and reagents used in chemical laboratory procedures
  • Conduct experiments using appropriate equipment, techniques and protocols without supervision and demonstrate ability to independently plan and carry out daily work.
  • Conduct research according to company's priority and establish schedules necessary to meet project timetables.
  • Use established DOE methodologies to execute experimentation.
  • Records experimental data according to established procedures, makes calculations, evaluates results, makes recommendations and maintains accurate records.
  • Prepare advanced technical reports and white papers. Summarizes and communicates data of a complex nature to non-technical audiences.
  • Able to lead medium to large new technology projects with minimal supervision; is accountable for results and owns the data.
  • Mentoring junior scientists & engineers
  • Conduct experiments using appropriate equipment, techniques and protocols without supervision and demonstrate ability to independently plan and carry out daily work.
  • Conduct research according to company's priority and establish schedules necessary to meet project timetables.
  • Record experimental data according to established procedures, makes calculations, evaluates results, makes recommendations and maintains accurate records.
  • Prepare advanced technical reports and white papers. Summarizes and communicates data of a complex nature to non-technical audiences.
  • Work with the R&D, Procurement and Manufacturing teams to identify, evaluate and qualify suppliers and raw materials as required for new product development (NPD) and establish instructions, processes and plans to transition projects from R&D to Manufacturing
  • Serving as the technical advisor to engineering, manufacturing, QA and procurement staff for raw material requirements, vendors, developing material test protocols and fabrication processes
  • Developing and updating engineering documents such as Manufacturing Instructions, drawings, tests and qualification protocols
  • Propose experimental approaches to complex problems.
  • Design and carry out experiments with scientific methods. Hypothesis to Conclusions reporting.
  • Scientific literature review.
  • Identifies deficiencies and improves existing procedures.
  • Collect and analyze information on competitor product performance.
  • Provides training to other associates.
  • Perform related duties as responsibilities necessitate.

Job Requirements:
REQUIREMENTS:
  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Must have at least 8 years' of relevant experience with a Masters' degree OR 5 years' of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Must have strong experience with statistical analysis (Minitab or similar, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different audiences.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills; Wet and Dry laboratory experience is critical for this role; Instron or similar experience is a plus
  • Estimated overnight travel is less than 10%
  • Scientific literature evaluation and reporting experience.
  • Awareness of industry standards and process tests for quality inspections
  • Understanding of good laboratory practices (GLP).
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, statistical methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Orthodontic and/or dental experience is a plus.
  • Research Experience in polymer composites, glasses and photo-initiators.
  • Medical device experience a plus.
  • Bonding adhesives/materials experience a plus.

Actual compensation packages take into account a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to geographic location; skill sets; relevant education and certifications; depth of experience; performance; and other business and organizational needs. At Envista, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The total compensation package for this position may also include an annual performance bonus, medical/dental/vision benefits, 401K match, and/or other applicable compensation plans.
