Job description

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

onX is seeking an experienced Product Content Data Operations Leader to build and scale the systems, processes, and teams that power how product content moves from source to customer experience.

At onX, "content" refers to the structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data that powers our products-such as mapping, geospatial,  land ownership, trails, access points, recreation information, and other adventure-relevant datasets that help people navigate and understand the outdoors.

This leader will own the operational backbone of product content: the workflows, tools, governance, and quality systems that ensure content is sourced, processed, validated, and delivered reliably into our products.

This role is responsible for defining and scaling the content operations model and content programs for the company, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to ensure that our content systems are efficient, scalable, and aligned with the needs of the product roadmap.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience managing large content or data ecosystems within technology products. They understand how operational rigor, automation, and strong governance unlock faster product innovation while maintaining data quality and trust.   They also have an understanding of how mapping and geospatial data work and can power the product experience.

This role will also play a key role in evolving how we incorporate automation, AI, and potentially community-driven data into our content pipeline over time.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions

Own the operational system for product content

  • Define and lead the operational strategy for how product content is sourced, processed, validated, and delivered into onX products.
  • Establish scalable workflows, governance models, prioritization frameworks, and operational frameworks that support content quality, reliability, and speed to product.

Build and lead the content operations organization

  • Lead and develop a team responsible for content operations and business processes, including content analysts, curation specialists, and quality reviewers.
  • Build organizational structure, capabilities, and operating rhythms that support scale and operational excellence.

Design scalable content platforms and processes

  • Partner with Engineering and Data Engineering to design and evolve systems for content ingestion, processing, transformation, and delivery.
  • Ensure that content workflows integrate cleanly with product development and release cycles.

Drive operational rigor and quality

  • Define content quality standards, validation processes, and governance models that maintain trust in onX data.
  • Implement monitoring, reporting, and feedback loops to ensure content readiness and product reliability.

Scale content operations through automation and AI

  • Identify opportunities to automate manual workflows across ingestion, tagging, validation, and review.
  • Understand leveraging AI and machine learning tools to improve efficiency, data quality, and operational scalability.

Enable new product experiences through content

  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering leaders to translate emerging content opportunities into scalable operational systems.
  • Ensure the content ecosystem supports evolving product capabilities and new customer experiences.

Evolve the company's proprietary data programs

  • Oversee programs that contribute to onX's proprietary content advantage, including partnerships, datasets, and emerging content sources.
  • Explore opportunities to incorporate community or user-generated data into the content ecosystem in a structured and scalable way.

Measure and continuously improve the system

  • Define and track operational metrics related to content throughput, quality, coverage, and reliability.
  • Use data and user insights to continuously refine content workflows and operational performance
  • Look for opportunities to embed AI as a repeatable co-pilot in daily workflows by integrating experimentation into real work, and continuously refining its use with sound judgment and validation.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • 12+ years of operations leadership experience, including 4+ years driving content operations, data operations, and process management, and 5+ years leading and managing teams within scaling technology organizations.
  • Experience working with data-intensive products.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing BPM frameworks and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with workflow management systems, content curation and review platforms, data QA tools, and automation and AI solutions.
  • A strong curiosity for exploring new technologies, including AI
  • A shared passion for and ability to demonstrate onX's Company Values.
  • Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
  • Ability to travel 6+ times annually for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.
ADDED BONUSES

Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with geospatial principles and spatial databases
  • Experience with multi-platform content delivery (web, mobile, app).
  • Experience within the outdoors or location-based services industry.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML tools for content tagging, validation, or automation.
  • Experience managing user-generated content or community-driven datasets.
THE ONX EXPERIENCE

onX is a distributed company with more than 400 employees across the country. We come together regularly to work in person and stay connected through regional basecamps and a culture that balances individual ownership with deep collaboration.

While we move quickly, we're not a scrappy start-up. We operate with clear goals, structure, and frameworks that guide how we prioritize and execute. Priorities matter. While they may shift, data shapes how we evolve as our business, products, and the world around us change.

Clear priorities and structure don't limit ownership - they make it possible. You'll have the autonomy to define your work and make meaningful decisions within clear strategic boundaries. You'll partner closely with others to solve complex problems and build solutions that scale across teams and platforms. Along the way, you'll be supported with feedback, tools, and opportunities to grow your craft as you take on new challenges.

WHERE YOU CAN WORK

onX has created a thriving distributed workforce designed to foster connection, collaboration, and shared experience across several US locations. We have two HQ locations in Bozeman and Missoula, MT and established virtual workforce Basecamps in Austin, TX; Denver, CO; Kalispell, MT; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; and Seattle, WA.

HOW YOU'LL BE COMPENSATED

onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. Applicants can expect to make between $180,000 to $224,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING YOU
  • Competitive salaries, annual bonuses, equity, and opportunities for growth
  • Comprehensive health benefits, including a no-monthly-cost medical plan
  • Paid parental leave of 13 weeks for birthing parents and 5 weeks for non-birthing parents
  • 401k matching at 100% for the first 3% you save and 50% from 3-5%
  • Company-wide outdoor adventures and amazing outdoor industry perks
  • Annual "Get Out, Get Active" funds to fuel your active lifestyle
  • Flexible time away package that includes PTO, STO, VTO, and paid holidays
PERFORMANCE ESSENTIALS

In this role, success is driven by cognitive abilities such as concentration and problem-solving, essential for our computer-centric tasks. onX will explore reasonable accommodations to ensure that individuals with diverse abilities can fully engage in and contribute to the essential physical and mental functions of the job. If you need assistance or accommodation, please contact us at PC@onxmaps.com.
