Product Assurance Engineers play a key role in bridging the gap between design and manufacturing teams. They work closely with designers to ensure that product specifications meet quality standards and regulatory requirements. During manufacturing, they collaborate to identify potential risks, implement quality control measures, and resolve any issues that arise. This role often involves facilitating communication between teams to ensure that quality assurance protocols are integrated throughout the product lifecycle, helping to deliver reliable and compliant products to market.

What is the difference between Product Assurance Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

FocusEnsuring product reliability, safety, and compliance throughout development and productionImproving overall product quality through testing, inspection, and process improvements
CertificationsOften requires certifications like ASQ CQE or Six SigmaSimilar certifications; focus on quality management systems
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with engineering, manufacturing, and compliance teamsWorks primarily in testing labs, inspection, and process analysis
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and manufacturingWidely used across manufacturing, software, and industrial sectors

While both roles aim to improve product quality, the Product Assurance Engineer emphasizes reliability, safety, and compliance throughout the product lifecycle, whereas the Quality Engineer focuses on testing, inspection, and process improvements to enhance overall quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product assurance engineer?

To thrive as a Product Assurance Engineer, you need a solid background in quality assurance, engineering principles, and risk management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Job description

Job Summary:
Oxide Computer Company is seeking a Product Assurance Engineer to ensure the highest quality products are shipped to customers. The role involves designing and executing stress tests, investigating reliability gaps, and collaborating with engineers to address system issues.
Responsibilities:
• Design and execute workload-driven stress tests, with a focus on workloads that replicate realistic production traffic patterns such as high connection-rate workloads, micro-burst traffic, large-flow saturation, multicast, and adversarial packet patterns.
• Instrument, observe, and correlate metrics that help characterize and pinpoint system issues.
• Drive chaos-monkey-style tests to simulate common hardware failure modes and control plane outages.
• Investigate availability and reliability gaps, and produce reproducible failure reports.
• Work with engineers across the software stack to triage findings and verify fixes and mitigations.
• Improve the assurance infrastructure itself: scripts, harnesses, chaos tooling, and automated regression suites.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Deep familiarity with troubleshooting traffic issues at different network layers and characterising performance and reliability of network data paths.
• Comfortable with low-level debugging, reading packet captures and reasoning from raw protocol state.
• Enjoy hands-on work with test infrastructure.
• Track record of finding non-obvious reliability bugs in complex systems.
• Proficient in at least one scripting or systems language (Python, Rust, Go) for building test harnesses and automating workload generation.
• Enjoy writing clear bug reports, knowledge articles, and technical documentation.
Company:
Oxide Computer Company delivers unified hardware and open source software for hyperscaler-class cloud computing on-premises. Founded in 2019, the company is headquartered in Emeryville, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
