What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software like Aspen HYSYS or CHEMCAD, and knowledge of process control systems and industry standards are essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and address complex engineering challenges. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and optimized process operations, which are critical for productivity and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges Process Systems Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Process Systems Engineers often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines, which can present challenges in aligning project objectives and schedules. Effective communication is essential to ensure all team members understand process requirements and constraints, especially when integrating new technologies or optimizing existing systems. Additionally, balancing safety, efficiency, and cost considerations while meeting regulatory standards can require creative problem-solving and strong project management skills.

What is a Process Systems Engineer?

A Process Systems Engineer is a professional who designs, analyzes, and optimizes complex industrial processes using principles from engineering, mathematics, and computer science. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in industries such as chemical manufacturing, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. Their responsibilities often include process modeling, simulation, control systems design, and troubleshooting of production systems. By integrating various technologies and methodologies, Process Systems Engineers help organizations achieve operational excellence.

What is the difference between Process Systems Engineer vs Chemical Engineer?

AspectProcess Systems EngineerChemical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; often certifications in process optimizationBachelor's in Chemical Engineering; licensure optional for certain roles
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, process design teamsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, design firms
Industry UsageProcess optimization, plant operations, systems designProduct development, process design, chemical production

Process Systems Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and optimizing manufacturing processes and systems, often working closely with plant operations. Chemical Engineers have a broader scope, including chemical reactions, product development, and process design. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, Process Systems Engineers specialize in process efficiency and systems integration within industrial settings.

Job description

Systems Engineer (Expert-Level)
Mission Intelligence Group is seeking an Expert-Level Systems Engineer to provide senior technical leadership across complex, multi-discipline GEOINT systems. This role supports mission-critical capabilities spanning the National System of Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG), Allied System of Geospatial-Intelligence (ASG), and Federal partners.
Your Role
As an Expert-Level Systems Engineer, you will operate at the enterprise and system-of-systems level, guiding engineering efforts across organizational and governmental boundaries. You will advise government leadership, integrate emerging technologies, and ensure GEOINT systems are resilient, reliable, and aligned with mission needs.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Government in directing requirements engineering, solutions engineering, integration, test & evaluation, and sustainment across NSG, ASG, and Federal Agencies
  • Lead and support Analysis of Alternatives (AoAs), Courses of Action (CoAs), trade studies, and engineering assessments
  • Translate mission and customer needs into system and capability requirements and technical solutions
  • Advise on proposed solution design changes based on requirements analysis and emerging technologies
  • Support requirements traceability across users, architectures, procedures, and systems
  • Assist in systems integration activities and allocation of requirements to architecture components and programs
  • Provide strategic input on technical planning, performance engineering, risk management, and interface design
  • Deliver expert guidance linking vision, strategy, plans, requirements, and capability development
  • Integrate and oversee efforts across multiple Major Systems Acquisitions
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of Senior-, Mid-, and Junior-level Systems Engineers
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Systems Engineering or a related STEM field, or equivalent additional experience
  • 18+ years of experience in government or industry supporting complex systems, including:
    • DoD / IC Acquisition and Requirements Processes
    • PPBES Process
    • Systems engineering of large-scale System-of-Systems or SOA environments
  • Strong understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NSG/ASG and NRO enterprises
  • Prior NGA and/or NSG/ASG program or project experience
  • Prior IC or DoD program/project experience
Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in Systems Engineering or a related STEM field
  • Working knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes, tools, and languages
  • Software Development Framework certification
  • INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) certification
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • Membership or leadership participation in professional organizations, such as:
    • ACSM
    • ASCE
    • ASPRS
    • OGC
    • SAREM
    • USGIF
  • Extensive experience in geospatial intelligence
  • Experience engineering solutions using:
    • Cloud-based technologies
    • Structured and unstructured Big Data
    • Automation, Augmentation, and Artificial Intelligence technologies
  • Demonstrated expertise in photogrammetry, remote sensing, image science, GIS, geomatics, or related fields
Why Mission Intelligence Group
