The Sustaining Engineer is responsible for supporting product brands after release to production. This role receives the complete technical pack and design intent from Product Development and ensures the product remains manufacturable, compliant, cost-effective, and properly documented throughout its lifecycle. The primary alignment is with Operations and Quality, not with New Product Development, although the role supports new Product Development during the handover process to manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for operating primarily as an Operations support function for continuous improvement. While changes follow the formal engineering change process, daily activities and priorities are driven by Operations and Quality. This distinction should be maintained for future department cost and resource allocation analysis.
  • Responsible for maintaining product documentation, technical files, certifications, and regulatory alignment for assigned product lines, ensuring that all released products remain compliant with applicable standards and internal quality requirements.
  • Responsible for providing support to Supply Chain on supplier selection and capability/suitability, pricing discussions and vendor-related technical questions. Act as a reference for supplier inquiries and cost-impact evaluations associated with production and component changes.
  • Responsible for investigating and disposition of all production defects, non-conformances, and supplier-related issues, ensuring appropriate root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventative measures are implemented, while considering Design for Manufacture (DFM). Own and close out NCPs in a timely manner. Communicating specific required methods of manufacturing where required, ensuring all expectations and critical to quality aspects of components are controlled, understood and directly communicated to suppliers. Supporting the creation of quality plans.
  • Responsible for providing engineering support to Manufacturing to ensure continuous production flow and operational efficiency and the reduction of waste. This includes lean production flow design and implementation, tooling updates, BOM clarifications, ECNS, and the design and development of quality and innovative production aids, jigs and fixtures, as well as providing detailed work instructions, operator training, communication of expectation and critical to quality aspects, methods of manufacture, process tips and best practices to improve manufacturability and quality consistency and to continuously improve. To proactively reduce risk and defects. Provide engineering support for Inspection and Quality Control activities.
  • Consult and act as the engineering point of contact for Customer Care and TAC, providing timely technical support on field issues and ensuring that the most up-to-date technical information is communicated internally and externally.
  • Accountable for all Engineering changes related to assigned products. Sustaining Engineers are responsible for proactively initiating, validating and documenting any product modification required by Suppliers, Operations. Quality, or Customer feedback, while following the formal Engineering Change process and correct communication of change.
  • Accountable for supporting new Product Development by contributing to design-for-manufacturing input, sharing lessons learned from sustaining activities, and providing feedback on specifications, materials and production feasibility to support the implementation of new products in to manufacture.
  • Other duties as assigned.
