Job Description:
Schreiber Foods is seeking a Energy Systems Technician to work in our clean and temperature-controlled working environment. We are looking for a first shift (5am-1pm). In this role, a person with prior maintenance experience will start at $31.85/hour (includes certification pay at 60 days of employment) with additional certification pay opportunities. Overtime and weekend work is to be expected in the Energy systems technician role. Position is eligible for overtime is paid on 8+ hours in a day (up to $47/hour), time and half paid on Saturdays, and double time paid on Sundays (up to $62/hour).
The Energy Systems Technician is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the plant's energy and utility systems, including boilers and steam systems, air compressors, ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, incoming plant water supply, and outgoing wastewater pre-treatment systems. This role supports continuous plant operations while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, food safety, and regulatory requirements.
This position maintains the foundational skills required to assist production during utility-related outages.
Key Responsibilities
Energy & Utility Systems Operations
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot boilers, steam systems, refrigeration systems, compressed air systems, HVAC systems, plant water supply, and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Maintain current and future wastewater assets, including treatment equipment and supporting systems.
  • Perform routine inspections, system rounds, and operational checks.
  • Accurately document equipment readings, work activities, and system conditions in approved logs and digital systems.

Precision Maintenance & Preventive Work
  • Lubricate, clean, and maintain machinery and components using precision maintenance practices to preserve equipment in like-new condition and kept in a precision state.
  • Document precision work using approved precision documentation sheets and digital PSM systems.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance inspections, testing, and servicing of equipment in accordance with recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP).

Ammonia Refrigeration & PSM Support
  • Operate and maintain the ammonia refrigeration system in accordance with site SOPs and applicable Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
  • Perform ammonia maintenance activities such as pump-downs, glycol system cleaning, and routine system servicing.
  • Support ammonia system improvement work and reliability initiatives as assigned.
  • Carry out assigned responsibilities under the PSM program, including inspections, documentation, and procedural compliance.
  • Assist with maintaining operating procedures and process safety information related to energy and utility systems.

Boilers & Steam Systems
  • Maintain and operate steam system equipment, including boilers.
  • Participate in required preparation activities for annual state boiler inspections, including equipment readiness and documentation support.

Safety, Food Safety & Compliance
  • Perform all required Preventive Control Program (PCP) and Critical Control Point (CCP) checks associated with the position.
  • Follow established reaction plans for Food Safety, Food Quality, and Customer Requirement outages, including notifying the appropriate Technical Authority (TA) or Team Leader (TL).
  • Work in confined spaces and around hazardous chemicals while following all applicable permits, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, PSM, food safety, and site-specific safety requirements.

Emergency Response & Training Support
  • Participate in Emergency Response Team (ERT) activities, including ammonia-related drills and other various spill and release scenarios.
  • Assist with planning and execution of emergency response drills related to credible plant emergency scenarios.
  • Serve as a technical resource to assist with training on energy systems operation and safety.
  • Obtain or maintain train-the-trainer certification as required and assist in skill development for energy systems.

Resource Coordination
  • Participate in work planning and coordination with internal trades and external contractors as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external resources to support stable and compliant system operation

Qualifications & Certifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Ammonia Operator II certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Boiler Level II certification or completion of the NWTC Boiler Program.
  • Ability to obtain essential craft skills (ESC1) coursework
  • Complete additional training or certifications as required by business needs or management direction.

Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in hot, cold, wet, and noisy environments.
  • Ability to work around operating equipment and climb stairs or ladders.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins and on call as required.
