Job Summary
The Surgical Tech Educator is a clinical resource assigned to clinical staff, students and interns in the surgical tech role.
Essential Functions

  • Orients new students, interns and staff to the department, including the hospital job description for Surgical Technologists, hospital and unit specific policies and procedures, availability and location of educational resources, and all safety precautions and emergency protocols.

  • Assigns appropriate cases to new students, interns and staff; alters as appropriate to meet individual or department needs

  • Monitors intern and staff progress utilizing 30-60-90 day check in process in collaboration with direct leader; Monitors student progress in collaboration with clinical program director/instructor

  • Maintains clinical competencies; Shares accountability for identifying orientation needs to meet initial and ongoing competencies with staff, preceptors and leadership.

  • Uses expert clinical knowledge to anticipate, assess, develop and implement education and resources for patient care staff

  • Mentors and coaches staff in developing and enhancing critical thinking and decision-making skills in the process of implementing education. Provides input for employee introductory reviews through the onboarding and training process.

  • Evaluates and maintains the formal system of orientation in collaboration with leadership to plan, develop, implement and evaluate orientation and staff development programs.

  • Collaborates with unit CNS and RN Educator to develop and implement standards of practice

  • Applies adult learning principles to training staff and in the development and review of learning tools.


Education/Certifications

  • Associate's Degree completion of an accredited CST program preferred or relevant experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years current experience as a CST in an operating room required or 3 years current experience in an Operating Room as an RN and is proficient in scrubbing skills with a sound knowledge base of the procedural techniques applied in surgery required.

  • 1+ years Pediatric experience preferred.

  • CST-Certified Surgical Technologist - The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council Required Upon Hire required.
