The Automation Developer designs, develops, tests, and deploys automations using the Boston Software Systems automation platform and scripting tools. Working with client data, they automate healthcare information systems. This role requires a combination of strong technical development skills and demonstrated customer service abilities, as the individual will work directly with clients on requirements gathering, business analysis, troubleshooting, and deployment.

You will collaborate closely with the Professional Services, Product, and Operations teams to deliver high-quality automation solutions within an Automation-as-a-Service (AaaS) delivery model.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain automations using Boston Software Systems development tools and environments.
  • Develop scripts, workflows, and integration logic using:
    • VBA / VB.NET
    • PowerShell and other scripting languages
    • SQL queries and data transformations
    • REST APIs and file-based integrations (HL7, FHIR where applicable)
  • Translate business requirements into reliable, well-structured automation workflows.
  • Maintain version control, technical documentation, and compliance with release management standards.
  • Debug automation failures, optimize stability, and improve the performance of existing workflows.
  • Support the deployment of Automation-as-a-Service (AaaS) solutions across multiple healthcare clients.

Client Interaction

  • Participate in client requirements gathering workshops with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical concepts in business-friendly language.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for deployed automation solutions.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure successful, on-time project delivery.

Quality & Compliance

  • Apply healthcare industry best practices for security and data management.
  • Ensure automations comply with client requirements, regulatory standards, and platform guidelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of processes, workflows, and system configurations.

Technical Requirements

Core Technical Skills

  • Advanced experience with VBA development (Excel automation, user interface automation, application logic).
  • Strong proficiency in VB.NET programming (console applications, software libraries, automation logic).
  • Experience with scripting technologies, including:
    • PowerShell
    • Python (preferred but not required)
    • Batch scripting
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Windows operating environments
    • Virtual machines and Citrix environments
    • Software robots interacting with graphical user interfaces (GUI)
  • Good knowledge of XPath and CSS selectors.
  • Experience working with REST and SOAP APIs, as well as data formats such as JSON and XML.
  • Strong SQL skills (queries, joins, stored procedures, and data transformation).
  • Knowledge of healthcare data standards is an asset, including:
    • HL7
    • X12
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience developing or supporting automation workflows using platforms such as UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Boston Workstation, Blue Prism, or Microsoft Power Automate is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of RPA best practices, including error handling, retry mechanisms, and exception logging.

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Experience with enterprise job schedulers, monitoring tools, or orchestration platforms.
  • OpenAI API / Azure OpenAI.

Qualifications
  • 5–8 years of experience in automation development or scripting.
  • Experience in healthcare IT, revenue cycle management, clinical workflows, or Electronic Medical Record (EMR/EHR) systems is a significant asset.
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong sense of ownership and initiative, with the ability to work independently and take responsibility for issues from diagnosis through resolution.

Language Requirements

Occasional availability outside of regular business hours may be required to support system upgrades, deployments, or critical production incidents.
