Job description

Sedgman is currently seeking an experienced Engineering Design Manager to join Sedgman's  Vancouver office.  

The Engineering Design Manager will be responsible for managing a multi disciplinary team, and the execution on major design projects. The ideal candidate will have prior experience overseeing, developing and leading the activities of a design team for a project to ensure project objectives are met - including technical solutions, time, budget and quality - and to ensure client relationships are nurtured, and they are providing critical mineral processing technical expertise throughout Sedgman.  

This is a unique role that provides team management and client exposure, great career opportunities, and a chance to support the growth and market presence of Sedgman by establishing a technical profile and networking for new developments. The incumbent will be able to identify new opportunities through their technical leadership, and provide leading and innovative solutions focused on value. 

Main responsibilities will require, although not be limited to:

  • Manage multidisciplinary team and programme workloads, providing technical and administrative guidance to the Design Engineering staff.

  • In conjunction with Management, provide resource planning to ensure resource requirement for the project's design are met.

  • Prepare Design Management Plans and manage implementation of these on projects.

  • Monitor and evaluate work to ensure it meets technical and performance requirements.

  • Direct and lead process engineering; monitor design delivery to ensure outcomes support technical leadership strategy

  • Identify, investigate, record, monitor and report on actions, resolution and costs of identified design non-conformances.

  • Administer technical briefs for sub-consultant engagement.

  • Coordinate design interfaces with the Client's other designers as required.

  • Drive solutions to increase probability of winning work, and allow delivery against strategy

  • Recognize and promote technical innovation; identify suitable technical partners for advancement in innovation

  • Actively mentor and create opportunities for knowledge sharing across the group

  • Select and monitor the performance of external consultants 

  • Ensure authorisation and issue of documents and drawings to the project team, vendors, sub-consultants, statutory authorities and other as necessary.

  • Manage any required updates to Sedgman standard specifications, typical/standard drawings, and calculations/simulations to reflect current industry standards or project requirements 

  • Manage NCR's, lessons learned and continuous improvement

What are we looking for? Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering.

  • Professional Engineering designation (preferably BC or in another jurisdiction in Canada)

  • Must have minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role

  • Extensive knowledge and practices on the organization and execution of engineering projects 

  • Prior experience in project management considered an asset.

  • Previous experience leading and managing technical/project teams

  • Mining & Minerals, or heavy industry experience is highly desired

  • MS Office suite, MS Project skills required

  • Will be eligible to work in Canada without sponsorship

The salary offered to the successful person for this position will consider education, experience, relevant skills and capability, geographic location and market conditions at the time of hire.
