Job Summary

The Process Engineer is a member of the Manufacturing Department, Engineering team, which is tasked to drive safe, stable, and reliable production processes for current and new manufacturing systems/product lines. In this position you are instrumental in creating and maintaining process input and output specifications, working with controls automation of manufacturing processes, performing capacity analyses, troubleshooting, testing and supporting maintenance in machine troubleshooting and correction. You will also have responsibilities for monitoring of process conditions and performing failure mode effect analysis to determine failure points of the process as well as continuous improvement actions using Lean tools to maximize efficiency and quality. You will work with all stakeholders of the organization including divisional/corporate resources, vendors and third-party suppliers. Other duties will be assigned on an as needed basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Problem Solving:
    • Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish assigned work.
    • Identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
    • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to Engineering and Maintenance managers for countermeasures.
    • Provide feedback to design engineers on equipment problems and needs.
    • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution to solve problems and improve process controls.
    • Interpret and explain complex information to others and how it can be used.
    • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
    • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions and/or improve machine performance and process productivity.
  • Controls and Automation:
    • Plan, design, install and maintain process controls for production machinery and

equipment.

  • Create and modify machine programs for all automated equipment.
  • Conduct projects assigned by Engineering manager regarding automating production

machinery and equipment.

  • Study and analyze existing process/equipment operation for designated area(s).
  • Design equipment, write programs and process controls, install and maintain controls that automate detection of out of specifications controls; provide the operator with feedback regarding operating conditions, verify that specifications were met for product produced.
  • Integrate machinery, equipment, controls with data base to provide on-line history of operating conditions for analysis as to best operating conditions for process/product; traceability of processes and products.
  • Assist in evolving Internet of Things utilization to streamline data collection and enhance updates to machine programs.
  • Implementation and Communication:
  • Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Oversee installation and operation to ensure that machines and equipment are installed and safely functioning according to specifications.
  • Establish and coordinate the maintenance and safety procedures, service schedule, and supply of materials required to maintain machines and equipment in the prescribed condition.
  • Create or update Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Interact directly with equipment and processes to validate conditions in support of

manufacturing personnel.

  • Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or

processes comply with all SEIP safety standards.

  • Inform management of any unsafe or potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Propose machine/process changes to improve safety condition of process for operator.
  • Research and Development:
  • Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain process equipment and systems to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles and scientific method.
  • Research and analyze design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of equipment to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance requirements.
  • Provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, manuals, or specifications to show stakeholders how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, or used.
  • Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications and necessity of modification.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Must be proficient in creating and conducting presentations and business cases.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with a meticulous focus on accuracy and quality of work.
  • Self-motivated, goal oriented with strong willingness to learn and solve complex problems.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards in the manufacturing industry.
  • Must possess the ability to work under strict deadlines with varied and competing priorities.
  • Must be trustworthy with company proprietary information.
  • Must be willing to travel to Mexico and Japan.

Preferences

  • Direct experience as a process engineer in the plastics industry
  • Bilingual in English and Japanese with use of technical language
  • Experience with Auto-CAD/Solid-Works
  • Previous experience with ISO, IATF 16949 or other regulated Quality Systems
  • Previous experience with LEAN manufacturing or Six Sigma certification
  • Previous experience with process/machine safety under CAL/OSHA regulations

Special Position Requirements

  • This job operates in a professional office and manufacturing environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as Safety Shoes, Glasses, and Hearing protection for plant floor environment.
  • Up to 10% travel required. Travel may be outside the local area, overnight and international.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time, perform office functions, and bend, twist and lift up to but not including 50 pounds.
  • This job may require pushing and pulling carts up to but not including 50 pounds.
  • Some filing may be required, which would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
