What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and sometimes PE certification. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), and Six Sigma methodologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive process improvements. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing production, ensuring safety, and achieving operational efficiency in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer might face when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing workflows. Additionally, they must balance cost constraints with the need for efficiency and quality improvements. Coordinating across departments—such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance—can present communication challenges, requiring strong collaboration skills. Successful Process Engineers address these issues by engaging stakeholders early, clearly communicating the benefits of changes, and using data-driven approaches to demonstrate positive outcomes.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, control, and optimize industrial processes, often within manufacturing or chemical plants. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and quality by analyzing workflows and modifying equipment or systems. Process Engineers commonly collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions that enhance production. Their work is critical for ensuring that operations run smoothly, cost-effectively, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Job description

A Company located in Telford, PA is seeking a hybrid Manufacturing Engineer with a heavy focus on Process Engineering and a support focus on Quality Engineering. The Engineer will lead the improvement of product quality and process efficiency through data in the manufacturing environment following continuous improvement methodologies. You will be responsible for root cause analyses up to defining process parameters and implementing process changes. You will work under the Director of Manufacturing while also closely working alongside the Production and the Quality Departments to ensure product quality.
Role Responsibilities
  • Manufacturing Improvement: Design and implement optimizations for production. Lead the transition of products from engineering to production by establishing proper tooling/fixturing, workflows, documentation and training.

  • Production Support: Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the shop floor. Resolve real-time manufacturing challenges as they arise. Address equipment performance, preventative maintenance, material issues, and structural challenges to minimize downtime.

  • Equipment Integration: Identify, specify, and implement new machinery and custom tooling within budget and scope as defined by management. Drive the adoption of manufacturing aids and fixtures to improve repeatability, reduce manual intervention, and improve safety. Work closely with production in on boarding new equipment and tooling to ensure repeatability after hand-off.

  • Continuous Improvement (Lean): Execute initiatives to improve cycle times, reduce waste and improve shop floor organization. Utilize data through Six Sigma methodologies to identify manufacturing bottlenecks and implement lean methodologies to streamline the movement of materials and information.

  • Technical Documentation: Develop and maintain high-quality manufacturing documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), process flow diagrams, and detailed work instructions that ensure technical requirements are met consistently. Work with Quality and Production to ensure all documentation meets ISO 9001 and will be adopted by personnel.

  • Quality & Engineering Support: Support the Quality department by ensuring shop processes can meet ISO 9001 standards. Perform QE activities like root cause analysis (Fishbone, 5 Whys), analyze data using statistical tools (JASP) and assist in all non-conformance investigations. Collaborate with the engineering design team to provide "Design for Manufacturability" (DFM) feedback on new and existing products.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Education & Experience: Engineering Background – 3-5 years of hands-on shop based experience in Mechanical engineering, Manufacturing engineering or Industrial engineering is required.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of manufacturing fabrication processes and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings and blueprints. Experience with manual and CNC machining, programming, fixturing and tooling is a major plus.
  • Technical Tools: Proficiency with CAD/CAM software and standard Microsoft office tools. Experience with CMM/Keyence measurement systems is a plus.
  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to diagnose mechanical or process-related issues and implement effective, permanent solutions
  • Process Documentation: Skilled in writing and maintaining SOPs and process flow charts.
  • ISO 9001:2015 Experience: General knowledge of requirements, implementation, and audits for ISO or a comparable standard is preferred.
  • Leadership Abilities: Experience managing projects and cross functional teams with a strong emphasis on constant clear communication. Strong ability to collaborate with quality, production and engineering to bridge the gap in a fast paced environment.

Physical Requirements
  • Required to bend, lift, and push up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, bending, stopping and walking, and use of phones and computers.
  • Must be able to read and write work instructions.
  • Employees must adhere to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements at all times.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperature changes, cold and warm temperatures, and loud noise.
