Process Engineer Process Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and sometimes PE certification. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), and Six Sigma methodologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive process improvements. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing production, ensuring safety, and achieving operational efficiency in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What is the difference between Process Engineer Process Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectProcess EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like Six Sigma often preferredBachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; certifications like Six Sigma are common
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, chemical facilities, or production linesIndustrial settings, plant floors, or process development departments
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceuticalsSimilar industries, often overlapping in chemical, manufacturing, and energy sectors

Both roles focus on optimizing manufacturing processes, ensuring safety, and improving efficiency. They often share similar qualifications and work environments, making them closely related in the industry.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer might face when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing workflows. Additionally, they must balance cost constraints with the need for efficiency and quality improvements. Coordinating across departments—such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance—can present communication challenges, requiring strong collaboration skills. Successful Process Engineers address these issues by engaging stakeholders early, clearly communicating the benefits of changes, and using data-driven approaches to demonstrate positive outcomes.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, control, and optimize industrial processes, often within manufacturing or chemical plants. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and quality by analyzing workflows and modifying equipment or systems. Process Engineers commonly collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions that enhance production. Their work is critical for ensuring that operations run smoothly, cost-effectively, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Qnity is seeking an experienced Process Safety Management (PSM) & Machine Safety Lead to provide site-level technical leadership at our Newark CMPT site. This role is fully dedicated to the Newark CMPT location and does not include responsibility for any other Qnity sites.

This position is a senior technical expert and program owner, responsible for the design, effectiveness, coordination, and continuous improvement of the site's Process Safety Management program. In addition, the role serves as the site lead for Machine Safety, owning the program strategically while partnering closely with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and EHS.

This role does not include direct people management. Leadership is exercised through technical expertise, influence, coordination, and strong system ownership.

This role reports to the Newark CMPT Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Leader.

Key Responsibilities

Process Safety Management (PSM)

  • Serve as Site PSM Committee Leader, owning program structure, cadence, integration across elements, and accountability
  • Coordinate the proper documentation of Process Safety Information
  • Lead and coordinate the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) program, including facilitation of PHAs and Dust Hazard Analyses (DHAs)
  • Own and drive strong execution of Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes
  • Ensure PHA, MOC, and PSSR recommendations are clearly tracked, technically sound, and closed in a timely manner
  • Maintain the site PSM documentation system, including records, actions, metrics, and meeting minutes
  • Ensure PSM programs and documentation align with Qnity standards and applicable regulatory requirements, while remaining flexible and fit-for-purpose
  • Ensure processes are appropriately classified (e.g., high-hazard vs. low-hazard operations) and support accurate facility siting documentation
  • Serve as the primary site technical contact for PSM audits, secondparty audits, and regulatory inspections
  • Conduct routine program and field audits with strong site visibility and engagement
  • Track, analyze, and report site-level PSM performance metrics and leading indicators
  • Participate in the Qnity PS&RM network, sharing learnings, risks, and best practices

Machine Safety (Site Lead)

  • Serve as the site owner for the Machine Safety program
  • Strategically own machine safety requirements while partnering heavily with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance for execution
  • Ensure machine safety systems align with applicable regulations, standards, and internal expectations
  • Lead or coordinate machine risk assessments and verify effective corrective actions
  • Provide technical input into safeguarding design, risk reduction strategies, and safe machine modifications
  • Support investigations, learning reviews, and corrective actions related to machine safety events and near misses

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety, Health, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Strong technical expertise in core PSM elements, including PHA, MOC, and PSSR
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating PHAs, DHAs, and site-wide or unit-level facility siting reviews
  • Strong working knowledge of Process Safety regulatory requirements and management systems
  • Qualified or willing to become qualified as a Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) practitioner
  • PSM auditing experience
  • Ability to lead through technical credibility, influence, and effective coordination
  • Proven ability to manage complex, time-sensitive, technically rigorous programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interface across disciplines and organizational levels

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in chemical processing or refinery environments
  • Demonstrated technical capability and ownership mindset in Machine Safety programs (risk assessments, safeguarding, compliance)

What This Role Is - and Is Not

  • A technical expert and program owner role
  • Not a peoplemanagement position
  • High accountability, high impact site role with strong crossfunctional influence
