What are some typical challenges faced by Process Development Scientists when scaling up from lab experiments to full production?

Process Development Scientists often encounter challenges when transitioning processes from the laboratory to large-scale production. These can include maintaining product quality and consistency, optimizing yields, and ensuring that processes are cost-effective at scale. Addressing equipment differences, process variability, and regulatory compliance are also common hurdles. Collaboration with engineers, manufacturing teams, and quality assurance professionals is essential to successfully navigate these challenges and achieve scalable, robust processes.

What is a Process Development Scientist?

A Process Development Scientist is a professional who designs, develops, and optimizes processes for manufacturing products, typically in industries like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or chemicals. Their work involves scaling up laboratory procedures to full production, improving efficiency, ensuring quality, and meeting regulatory standards. They collaborate with research, engineering, and manufacturing teams to implement new processes or refine existing ones. Process Development Scientists play a critical role in bringing new products from the research phase to commercial production while maintaining safety and compliance.

What does a process development scientist do?

A process development scientist designs, optimizes, and scales up manufacturing processes for products such as pharmaceuticals or chemicals. They analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure processes meet quality and regulatory standards, often using tools like statistical software and laboratory equipment. Their work supports efficient, reliable production and continuous process improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Development Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Development Scientist, you need a background in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering, supported by at least a bachelor’s (often master’s or PhD) degree and experience in laboratory research. Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (such as HPLC, GC, and mass spectrometry), process modeling software, and relevant regulatory standards is crucial. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help drive innovation and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the efficient development and scale-up of robust, safe, and cost-effective processes in pharmaceutical, biotech, or chemical manufacturing environments.

What You Will Contribute:

We're seeking a Senior Manufacturing Process Engineer to serve as a technical leader in developing, validating, and optimizing manufacturing processes. This role plays a key role in leading and advancing structured engineering systems, improving process performance, and ensuring consistent, scalable results across operations.

You'll lead complex process development initiatives, drive high-impact projects, and help define best practices in process validation, control, and continuous improvement-while mentoring engineers and supporting production performance.

This role operates within a structured engineering system focused on formal process validation, defined control limits, and data-driven execution to deliver consistent, repeatable performance. It is heavily focused on injection molding and requires the ability to develop, validate, and stabilize processes in a dynamic production environment.

What You'll Do

Engineering Systems & Process Standardization

  • Define, implement, and continuously improve structured engineering systems for process development, validation, and control
  • Establish standard methodologies for process window development, documentation, and data-driven decision making
  • Ensure consistent application of engineering practices across programs and teams

Process Development & Validation

  • Lead complex process development, mold validation, and troubleshooting activities
  • Develop robust, data-driven process windows that ensure repeatability and stability
  • Align validation outcomes with production-ready process definitions
  • Lead structured validation activities to define process windows and ensure processes are capable across expected operating ranges
  • Apply scientific molding principles to establish and validate process windows

Process Stability & Problem Solving

  • Provide technical leadership in resolving complex molding issues, including process instability, variation, and production disruptions
  • Apply structured, data-driven root cause analysis to improve quality, yield, and efficiency
  • Ensure processes operate within validated process windows and defined control limits to maintain stability, repeatability, and consistency across production.
  • Work within defined process control frameworks rather than relying on trial-and-error adjustments, using structured methods to diagnose and correct process variation

Project Leadership & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead cross-functional engineering projects (e.g., scrap reduction, cycle time improvements, capability expansion)
  • Support capital equipment decisions, tooling strategy, and manufacturing investments
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts and ensure solutions are sustained and standardized
  • Provide technical input during quoting and new program planning to define process capability, approach, and risk

Mentorship & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Mentor and develop engineers, reinforcing strong engineering discipline and execution
  • Partner with Production, Tooling, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure process capability and alignment
  • Provide hands-on technical support during critical launches, trials, and production disruptions, stepping in to stabilize processes and restore performance when needed

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of manufacturing or process engineering experience
  • Strong expertise in process development, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Proven ability to lead projects and influence cross-functional teams
  • Analytical, data-driven mindset with a passion for continuous improvement
  • Experience mentoring or developing technical talent

Preferred: Experience in plastics or injection molding is strongly preferred. However, candidates with related manufacturing backgrounds-such as machining, castings, or other complex process environments-are strongly encouraged to apply.
