Graphic Design Specialist
JOB SUMMARY / POSITION PURPOSE
The Graphic Design Specialist plays a key role in advancing WFYI's mission by transforming the value of public media into clear, compelling visual communications that inform, inspire, and deepen audience connection and support.
Blending creativity with strategy, the Graphic Design Specialist brings public media to life through thoughtful, audience-centered design. This role is responsible for creating a consistent, engaging, and effective visual identity across membership and fundraising materials, program identities, and audience-facing illustrations, and contributing to content marketing and digital engagement efforts, including providing audience-facing copy as needed.
This position is part of WFYI's marketing team, a collaborative group focused on meeting audiences where they are, sparking engagement, and building support for the mission of public media. The marketing team works closely with colleagues across the organization and external partners, bringing a strategic, goal-oriented approach to every project.

WORK LOCATION, TRAVEL, AND SCHEDULING
This position's work location will be primarily at WFYI's main office in Indianapolis, Indiana, with flexibility for limited meetings and events as needed.
Travel may be required to support organizational needs.
This position's schedule will generally align with WFYI's normal business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern. Evening or weekend work may be required to support organizational needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate should possess the qualifications described below.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, art, communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Experience
  • Three to five years of experience in graphic design, marketing, or visual communications, preferably within a nonprofit, media, or other mission-driven organization.
  • Experience collaborating with internal stakeholders and external partners and incorporating feedback into final deliverables.
  • Experience developing coordinated digital and print design materials for events, campaigns, and other audience-facing initiatives.
  • Experience managing multiple design requests, production schedules, and deadlines while maintaining quality, consistency, and responsiveness.
  • Experience organizing and maintaining shared design files, templates, and asset libraries to support collaboration, consistency, and efficient production workflows.
  • Experience reviewing design files and final deliverables for accuracy, consistency, brand alignment, and production readiness.
  • Experience guiding colleagues in the use of design tools, templates, and brand resources in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience with project management, including coordinating design work, clarifying project scope and priorities, and maintaining progress across teams.
  • Experience with social media design and/or motion or animation graphics, or the ability to quickly develop expertise in those areas.

Technical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Working knowledge of office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, sufficient to support collaboration, presentations, and routine administrative tasks.
  • Working familiarity with digital and print production requirements, including file setup, formatting, and delivery standards.
  • Working ability to prepare and adapt design files for a range of digital and print applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to discuss design concepts and provide limited support for audience-facing messaging as needed.

Additional Qualifications
  • Experience managing partner or vendor relationships and coordinating production processes for print or other design deliverables.
  • Flexibility to travel and work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed to support organizational priorities.
  • Portfolio demonstrating digital and print design capabilities and the ability to adapt materials for different platforms and audiences.
