Job description


Endurance IT Services is seeking an experienced Process Control Engineer for a client in Newport News! The Process Control Engineer is responsible for the design, programming, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of industrial control systems supporting critical operations. This position is primarily focused on PLC programming, troubleshooting, and control system optimization, representing approximately 90% of the role's responsibilities. The engineer will support SCADA systems, instrumentation, process automation projects, and legacy OpenVMS environments during ongoing modernization efforts. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining reliable and efficient operations through the implementation of automation solutions, control strategy improvements, and continuous system enhancements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, program, configure, test, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems.
  • Support and maintain SCADA systems, including system configuration, data collection, alarms, monitoring, and operator interfaces.
  • Develop and optimize process control strategies to improve operational performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Configure and support HMI applications, RTUs, instrumentation, and associated industrial control equipment.
  • Troubleshoot complex process control, automation, and communications issues across operational facilities.
  • Support automation projects, system upgrades, and control system modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and external vendors to resolve issues and implement improvements.
  • Maintain system documentation, backups, configuration standards, and change management records.
  • Support industrial networking infrastructure and communications between PLCs, SCADA systems, and field devices.
  • Participate in on-call support and provide technical assistance during system outages or emergency situations.
  • Assist with migration efforts from legacy control platforms, including OpenVMS-based systems.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience supporting industrial automation and process control systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC systems.
  • Strong experience with SCADA systems and HMI development.
  • Knowledge of industrial instrumentation, process control principles, and control system architecture.
  • Experience with industrial communications and networking protocols.
  • Experience with SQL databases, historians, and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity and OT/ICS security best practices.
  • Experience integrating PLCs, SCADA systems, instrumentation, and industrial network infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
