What is a private equity accountant?

Private Equity Accountants are finance professionals who manage the accounting, reporting, and financial operations for private equity funds and their portfolio companies. They are responsible for tasks such as tracking investments, preparing financial statements, calculating fund performance, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Their work helps private equity firms make informed investment decisions and meet reporting requirements for investors and regulators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private equity accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Equity Accountant, you need a strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and investment fund structures, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA qualification. Familiarity with portfolio management software, partnership accounting systems, and advanced Excel skills is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and managing complex transactions. These abilities ensure accurate fund accounting, regulatory compliance, and timely reporting, which are vital for supporting investment decisions and client trust.

The roles overlap in skills and industry usage but differ in focus and specific responsibilities.

What are some of the unique challenges a private equity accountant faces compared to other accounting roles?

Private Equity Accountants often encounter unique challenges such as managing complex fund structures, tracking capital calls and distributions, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. The role involves frequent interaction with investment professionals, auditors, and fund administrators to reconcile investment transactions and valuations. Additionally, tight reporting deadlines and the need to adapt to customized investor reporting standards can make time management and attention to detail especially important in this role.

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Private Equity Accountant/Controller to join our team on a part-time basis. This individual will oversee the financial operations of Cathay’s US private equity arm by liaising with the firm’s outside accounting, tax and compliance administrators to ensure accurate accounting, regulatory compliance, and timely reporting. The ideal candidate has significant experience in U.S.-based private equity fund accounting and can operate autonomously with a high level of integrity and precision. The role allows remote flexibility, with an expectation to visit our New York City office once every two to three months for in-person collaboration with the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  3. Monitor compliance with U.S. regulatory requirements including SEC-related filings and partnership agreements
  4. Review general ledgers, capital accounts, and investment schedules
  5. Coordinate and review fund NAV calculations and capital calls/distributions
  6. Manage quarterly and annual financial reporting, including investor reports and audit support
  7. Assist with cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis
  8. Support deal teams with transaction-related accounting and reporting
  9. Implement and maintain effective internal controls and accounting policies

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience within private equity, venture capital, and/or hedge funds
  • Experience with U.S. fund structures, private equity vehicles, and financial reporting standards
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. compliance requirements and SEC regulations affecting private funds
  • Experience with fund administration platforms and accounting software (e.g., Investran, QuickBooks, etc.)
  • Highly organized, analytical, and capable of managing multiple priorities independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

What We Offer:

  • Flexible, part-time schedule (30–32 hours/week) with potential for increased scope
  • Remote work flexibility with periodic in-person check-ins at our NYC office
  • Competitive hourly compensation
  • Opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and growing investment firm
  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial team environment
  • Compensation: $75–$85 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications
