Printmaking Studio Assistant information

What is a printmaking studio assistant?

Printmaking studio assistants are individuals who support the daily operations of a printmaking studio. Their responsibilities often include preparing materials, maintaining equipment, assisting artists with printing processes, and ensuring a safe and organized workspace. They may also help with administrative tasks, inventory management, and providing technical support to students or artists using the studio. This role requires knowledge of various printmaking techniques and the ability to work collaboratively in an artistic environment.

What are the typical daily tasks and collaborative responsibilities of a printmaking studio assistant?

As a Printmaking Studio Assistant, your daily tasks often include preparing materials and equipment, maintaining a clean and safe workspace, and assisting artists or students with printing processes. You'll regularly collaborate with studio managers and artists to set up presses, mix inks, and troubleshoot technical issues. Additionally, you may be responsible for inventory management and helping organize workshops or exhibitions, which provides opportunities to build relationships and learn from experienced printmakers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a printmaking studio assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Printmaking Studio Assistant, you need foundational knowledge of printmaking techniques, studio safety protocols, and basic art or design education. Familiarity with printmaking equipment such as presses, screen printing tools, and cleaning chemicals, as well as relevant health and safety certifications, is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you support artists and maintain a productive studio environment. These skills ensure safe operations, high-quality work, and an efficient, collaborative studio space.

Job description

About the Job

Lecturer Pool
The Department of Art in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for part-time, temporary lecturer positions. This posting establishes a pool of lecturers who will be selected as needed.
The Department of Art is committed to building an intellectually vibrant, culturally inclusive, and academically diverse department. We seek energetic colleagues with a strong professional record and expertise in one or more of our art practices. We welcome artists open to cross-disciplinary teaching, foster dynamic and inclusive learning, and incorporate traditional and non-traditional approaches to art.
Lecturers in the Department of Art work with non-majors, Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and, occasionally, Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students enrolled in courses. In some circumstances, lecturers may provide service to the department. Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Class size varies from 10 to 24 students in studio-based courses and up to 120 students in lecture courses with teaching assistant support. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach undergraduate and, on occasion, graduate students in assigned course(s).
  • Hold office hours to assist students.
  • Supervise teaching assistant(s).
  • Provide demonstrations and critiques.
  • Assist students in studios and labs.
  • Grade assignments and submit grades.
  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings.
  • Based on the appointment, provide service to the department.

    • Advanced studies at a foreign school that does not award MFA degrees.
    • Extended advanced study with recognized artists in the field.
    • Professional achievement that provides a depth of knowledge in the field comparable to an MFA degree. This might include evaluations by distinguished peers in the field, which would state that, because of an exhibition record and professional achievement, the applicant has the equivalent of an MFA.
    • Practicing artist in the area(s) to which you are applying.
    • Evidence of a current exhibition record and professional level of accomplishment in the area(s) to which you are applying.
