Printing Intern information

What is a printing intern?

Printing Interns are entry-level professionals who assist in various tasks related to the printing process in print shops, publishing houses, or similar organizations. They typically support the setup and operation of printing equipment, help with quality control, prepare materials, and learn about different printing techniques. The role is designed to provide hands-on experience in the printing industry and is often part of an educational or vocational program. Printing Interns work under the supervision of experienced staff and gain valuable skills for future careers in printing or graphic production.

What kinds of hands-on projects and responsibilities can a printing intern expect during their internship?

As a Printing Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on tasks such as assisting with pre-press preparation, operating basic printing equipment under supervision, and helping with quality checks on finished products. Interns often support experienced staff in setting up print jobs, managing materials, and troubleshooting issues that arise during production. This role provides valuable exposure to the workflow of a print shop and helps interns develop practical skills in both traditional and digital printing processes. Collaboration with designers and production teams is common, offering insights into the full lifecycle of print projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a printing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Printing Intern, you need basic knowledge of printing processes, keen attention to detail, and a willingness to learn, often supported by relevant coursework or vocational training. Familiarity with printing software (such as Adobe Creative Suite), digital presses, and finishing equipment is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help you adapt quickly and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced environment. These skills ensure print jobs are completed accurately, efficiently, and to client specifications, building a solid foundation for a future career in printing.

Job description

The Graphic Design Intern produces visual assets for print, stage, digital, and social use, working inside an established brand system. This role is built for portfolio applicants and is one of the few in the program with a fully tangible output: by the end of a cycle, a design intern can point to assets that appeared in a national conference hall.
This role is ideal for: A designer who wants work out in the world at scale - printed, mounted, and eight feet tall - instead of another spec project built for a portfolio.
