What is a principal storage engineer?

Principal Storage Engineers are senior-level professionals who design, implement, and manage large-scale data storage solutions for organizations. They oversee the architecture, performance, and security of storage systems, ensuring high availability and reliability. These engineers often lead teams, set technical direction, and work closely with other IT departments to align storage infrastructure with business needs. Their role requires deep expertise in various storage technologies, such as SAN, NAS, cloud storage, and data backup strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a principal storage engineer?

To thrive as a Principal Storage Engineer, you need deep expertise in storage architecture, data management, and systems integration, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with SAN/NAS technologies, storage virtualization, cloud storage platforms, and certifications such as SNIA or vendor-specific credentials are typically required. Strong problem-solving, project leadership, and communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and guide storage strategy. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and secure storage solutions that support organizational data needs and performance goals.

What are some common challenges principal storage engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise storage environments?

Job description

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
The Activity Apps team builds and operates Nike Run Club (NRC) and Nike Training Club (NTC) - the mobile experiences that move millions of Nike athletes through runs, workouts, training plans, and guided coaching every day. As a Software Engineer 2 on Android, you'll be a growing IC on a feature squad, partnering daily with senior Android engineers, iOS peers, backend engineers, Product, Design, and QA. This role reports to an Engineering Manager for Activity Apps and works alongside the Principal and Lead engineers who will invest in your growth.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Nike is seeking a Software Engineer 2 on Android who has shipped in a real consumer app, is comfortable in modern Android, and is ready to grow into more complex ownership. You'll take on well-scoped features and pieces of larger initiatives, write clean and testable Kotlin, and lean into the mentorship the team offers. The ideal candidate cares about craft, moves fast without cutting corners, and is curious about how the app actually behaves in an athlete's hand.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 2+ years of professional Android development experience shipping consumer- facing apps
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; will accept any suitable combination of education, experience and training
  • Proficiency in Kotlin, including Coroutines and Flow; working knowledge of the modern Android stack (Jetpack Compose, Hilt/Dagger, Room, WorkManager, Navigation)
  • Understanding of Android architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI) and how features are structured in a multi-module codebase
  • Familiarity with the Android systems activity apps rely on - location, sensors, foreground services, lifecycle, audio focus, push - and willingness to go deep in the areas you own
  • Comfort consuming REST/GraphQL APIs and handling offline, low-bandwidth, and error states gracefully
  • Experience writing unit and UI tests (JUnit, Compose UI tests, Espresso)
  • Familiarity with Gradle, CI/CD, and the Google Play release process
  • Strong debugging habits and an interest in growing them - profiling, memory analysis, ANR/crash triage
  • Collaborative mindset; clear communicator in code review, design discussion, and written docs
  • Experience with Spec Driven Development leveraging LLM coding agents and autonomous build and review loops

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON
You'll build features in NRC or NTC on Android alongside more senior engineers who will help you take on progressively more complex work. Your code will run in the hands of millions of athletes.
  • Implement features in the NRC or NTC Android app - from spec through shipped release - with guidance from senior engineers on the squad
  • Own the Android side of well-scoped feature work and contribute pieces of larger, cross-platform initiatives
  • Write clean, testable, idiomatic Kotlin and uphold the team's quality bar in code review
  • Contribute to the workout session stack on Android and adjacent surfaces (sensors, background execution, storage, upload) as you build depth in this area
  • Instrument features for observability and experimentation; learn from production behavior and iterate
  • Participate in on-call rotation for app stability; help triage crashes, ANRs, and consumer-reported issues on Android
  • Learn and adopt Android best practices and platform updates that improve the athlete experience
  • Adopt AI-native development practices on the Android team - internal AI tooling, code assistance, evaluation harnesses - and share what's working NIKE, Inc. is a growth company that looks for team members to grow with it.

Position Location & Schedule
This position is based at our incredibly beautiful worldwide campus headquarters location in Beaverton, Oregon. You'll work a "4/1 hybrid" schedule - Mondays - Thursdays are in the office and it's optional if you'd like to work Fridays from the Nike campus office or your home office.
We offer a number of accommodations to complete our interview process including screen readers, sign language interpreters, accessible and single location for in-person interviews, closed captioning, and other reasonable modifications as needed. If you discover, as you navigate our application process, that you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, please complete the Candidate Accommodation Request Form.
