Job description
Under the supervision of the Admission and Registration Supervisor in collaboration with the Patient Care Unit Manager, the Principal Admitting Worker is generally assigned a primary work unit but may rotate or be assigned to any area or site as outlined in the Admitting Department Expectations.
The Principal Admitting Worker is responsible for greeting, patient identification, check-in, and registering patients, and coordinating escort upon arrival for services and/or after triage by the nurse. The registration process includes gathering financial and demographic information, cash collection, and entering it into the computer system quickly and accurately. The Principal Admitting Worker must understand their role, provide superior customer service, and maintain a high degree of professionalism. He or she is required to utilize a variety of hospital information systems to effectively communicate with patients and visitors and to effectively respond to inquiries. The Admitting Representative must comply with all guidelines put forth by the Medical Center Policies and Procedures.
All Admitting Workers have a critical influence on a patient's health care experience in our Medical Center and must act as an ambassador of services. The incumbent is responsible for meeting patient needs, demonstrating a willingness to learn new skills, and fostering a harmonious work environment in which high-quality patient care and customer service are consistently provided. Team members promote cooperative working relationships with each other, physicians, other disciplines, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback professionally.
This position requires cross-training in Financial Counseling and assisting with Senior Admitting functions as needed. Financial Counselor duties include screening and assigning patient liabilities for all emergent, urgent, and self-pay patients, processing reservations, confirming insurance eligibility and benefits, and securing authorizations. The Financial Counselor counsels patients and/or their families regarding their financial liability and secures deposits on self-pay and/or collects patient liability portions for routine/elective admissions. The incumbent will also screen all incoming patient transfers to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Pediatric access center duties include procuring the assignment of beds from nursing units for incoming patients, tracking patient flow throughout the hospital, and performing census reconciliation.

Qualifications
Requirements:
- Associate's degree or two years of relevant experience.
- Two (2) or more years of experience at the Sr. Admitting Worker or comparable level.
- Proficiency in health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements.
- Proficiency in reimbursement of financial policies.
- ADT experience required, knowledge of office machines; typing 30 wpm, and must have basic PC skills.
- Ability to solve problems; analyze data and recommend changes.
- Must be able to multitask and prioritize.
- Ability to follow instructions; work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment.
- Analytical and grammatical skills are necessary to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Articulate and concise oral communication and the ability to write clearly and concisely.
- Must have strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Ability to work in San Francisco, Monday-Friday, 9:00 to 5:30, and holidays when required.
Preferences:
- Bilingual ability.
- Previous experience in a hospital setting.
- Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology.
- Knowledge of government program regulations, Medicare, MIA, CCS, and other third-party payors.
