Primate jobs include jobs in a zoo, laboratory, or primate sanctuary, as well as research jobs, such as primatologists, wildlife biologists, and zoologists. The duties and responsibilities for these different jobs vary widely. For example, as a primate caretaker at a zoo, your duties may include cleaning enclosures and feeding the animals, while as a primatologist, you may travel to wildlife sanctuaries to study the behavior of primates or assess threats to the natural habitat of primates. Some primate specialists also consult with park rangers and law enforcement workers to prevent poaching.

What are some common challenges faced when working as a primate keeper in a zoo or sanctuary setting?

Primate keepers often encounter challenges such as managing complex social dynamics among primate groups, ensuring environmental enrichment to prevent boredom, and maintaining strict hygiene protocols to prevent zoonotic disease transmission. Daily tasks can be physically demanding, including cleaning enclosures, preparing specialized diets, and observing animal behavior for health or welfare concerns. Effective communication and teamwork with veterinarians, researchers, and other animal care staff are essential for providing the best care and advancing knowledge about primate species.

What are primates?
