The Health Education Program Coordinator is a key member of the Health Education Program of the California Poison Control System (CPCS). This individual will utilize public health theories to develop, coordinate, and implement the poison prevention education and awareness program for California, while participating in strategic planning and conducting needs assessments to plan and adjust the program. The responsibilities of this position include: participating in strategic planning; conducting needs assessments; program development; coordination and implementation; building and cultivating new and existing internal and external partnerships; maintaining and defining effective educational tools and methods; management of evaluation tools; research and reporting; training/presenting to internal and external partners; support/facilitation of educational events.
Toxicological outbreaks requiring an immediate public health response is a critical task of the CPCS Health Education Program that the Health Education Program Coordinator must take part in. California's culturally, linguistically, and geographically diverse landscape requires unique public health interventions to address toxicologically related health emergencies to mitigate outbreaks and protect communities. Interventions led by the Executive Director, Medical Director, or the Health Education Program Manager, may include the timely development of communication campaigns that effectively reach monolingual, non-English speaking communities, and/or participating in coordinating media coverages, creating digital and print materials in plain language, and participating in organizational meetings with stakeholders to understand toxicological issues affecting our community. Incumbent must be able to multitask and reprioritize, to participate during applicable public health emergencies in a timely fashion to effectively offer critical prevention and education services to Californians.
The Health Education Program Coordinator is an experienced educator who can work independently. This individual will work closely with the Health Education Program Specialist and Health Education Program Manager. They will actively participate in poison prevention education and awareness in California through the planning and development of new curriculums/courses, while adjusting the existing program in a continuing education environment. This individual will actively participate in long-range strategic planning based on the latest research, data, and need assessments-identifying target audiences in the state who are vulnerable to poisonings that the program needs to engage with.
To develop a robust Health Education Program, the Health Education Program Coordinator will help evaluate prospective program partners to help expand the reach of the program, and when applicable, integrate program components into existing and new partnerships. This individual will identify and develop evaluation tools to examine the processes and outcomes of the program, while implementing program improvements based on gathered data. Additionally, this individual will play a key role in presentations and instruction of course to internal and external audiences, which includes evaluation and adjustment of program based on audience participation and feedback. Presentations and outreach include support and participation in special program events, which may require travel.
This position is located at the CPCS Central Office on the Mission Bay campus of the University of California, San Francisco.
Travel is required outside the San Francisco Bay area, which can average approximately 1 to 3 days per month.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The California Poison Control System (CPCS) is a 24 hour-a-day informational hotline serving residents statewide in California. It is designated by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority and managed by the UCSF School of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy.
CPCS operates from 4 UC-affiliated answering sites (UCSF/ZSFG, UCDMC, Valley Children's Hospital, and UCSD) managing approximately 283,000 calls per year, utilizing the most up-to-date computerized information systems. Pharmacists, nurses, and poison information providers respond to calls to the California Poison Control System (CPCS) and provide assessment, information, management advice, in-depth consultation, and follow-up for emergency telephone toxicology and poisoning calls.
CPCS is accessible to the public, medical professionals, and emergency responders toll-free, 24/7, 365 days a year. CPCS is accredited by the American Association of Poison Control Centers, administered by the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy and responsible to the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA). CPCS is the largest provider of poison control services and programs in the United States.
CPCS's Health Education Program develop and implement innovative strategies to prevent poisonings and raise awareness of the CPCS and its services. These programs and strategies include, but not limited to:
- Poison Prevention Training Program
- Poisons, Prevention & Help Training Program for Community Based Organizations
- Poison Safety Online Education Course
- School age children poison prevention outreach through stakeholder collaborations
- Annual development of new educational tools

Required Qualifications
- Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

- Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.

- Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience coordinating and implementing public health programs, defining measurable deliverables, and evaluating program outcomes in a University, Public Health, or Clinical Care organization.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to connect with people from diverse populations with an understanding of the communication tools and methods necessary for effective delivery of public health education for these individuals.
- Demonstrated success in building partnerships and collaborations as a volunteer, student, or employee.
- Experience in conducting general qualitative and/or quantitative research and reporting on results.
- Experience in business software and social networking experience including general office, presentation, and data collection software and social media platforms.
- Broad experience as spokesperson. This can be from volunteer, student, or employee experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Program and Curriculum Development
Plans and develops new programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in a continuing education environment.
- Uses public health theories to improve Health Education Program by developing new health educational tools and curriculum with the goal of health promotion and maintenance as it relates to poison prevention. Must use strategic planning strategies to elevate health education program during this process.
- Responsible for the development and/or enhancement of two new or existing health educational tools on an annual basis.
- Independently participates in program planning and development through the assessment of program needs, which includes assessment of survey responses collected through outreach and education. Based on assessment of collected responses, individual will propose:
- Program's capacity to address the communities' poison prevention needs
- Methods to plan and implement an evidence-based program
- Evaluation of current program for improvements
- Co-facilitation of annual usability testing.
- Support with program enhancement and development, including primary prevention and secondary prevention methods, which can include curriculum involving:
- 911 dispatcher partnership
- Policy integration work (cannabis regulation, county/federal level partnership and work, etc.)
- HEP clinical integration curriculum
Public Health Outreach Response
Provide immediate public health outreach response during toxicological health emergencies to mitigate outbreaks and protect communities.
- Participate in ad hoc stakeholder meetings in response to public health toxicological health emergencies.
- Research and proposal of effective communication campaign strategies for identified target groups.
- Identification and collaboration with existing organizations tied to identified target groups to help drive direct support and action within affected communities.

Strategic Planning
Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for public educational programs.
- Utilizes latest research and data-data can include California's latest census report, CDC injury prevention reports, latest CPCS Key Informant Study, internal CPCS exposure and Poison Hotline utilization reports, vendor (Community Printers) audience report-to help determine program priorities and target populations.
- Report and analysis of gaps in caller data.
- Utilization of latest public health data-CDC's Accidents or Unintentional Injuries report, National Poison Data System poison exposure reports, internal CPCS poison exposure caller data-to determine target populations.
- Performs needs assessments of CPCS Health Education Program through SWOT analysis, and the prioritization of poison related issues affecting Californians, which can be accomplished through usability testing, focus groups, and survey analysis to gather data. Data collected will be supported public health theories to help define program objectives and direction.
- Develops program planning reports collected from internal CPCS caller data to identify areas where the Poison Hotline is underutilized. Reports will help address gaps in services to improve program. Report can include:
- Environmental scan of areas with gap in services
- Research and input of strategic plan for target audience based on gaps in caller data
- Research districts and issues that are relevant to constituents in order to work with state representatives on public policy
Program Partnerships
Evaluates prospective program partnerships.
- Identification of new and enhancement of current stakeholder partnerships with the goal of aligning CPCS objectives with constituents, helping CPCS become an integral part of these organizations.
- Evaluate and propose potential program partners.
- Works with Health Education Specialist to implement comprehensive partnership strategies. This requires research and understanding of partners' established programs and goals/objectives to implement strategies that can include integration of CPCS tools and curriculum to partners' programs and professional development of staff through CPCS education and trainings.
Project Timelines, Deliverables and Budgets
Develops, prepares and reconciles budget for program.
- Assists in developing, preparing and reconciling project timelines, deliverables and budgets for program.
- Works directly with Health Education Program Manager to reconcile and discuss projections and planning.
- Works with finance analyst to upates PO/Invoice tracking log and reports changes in tracking log.
