What is presentation design?

Presentation design is the process of creating visually engaging and effective slides or visuals for presentations, typically using software like PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides. Presentation designers combine graphic design skills with storytelling techniques to convey information clearly and memorably. Their work involves selecting appropriate layouts, typography, colors, and imagery to support the presenter's message and engage the audience. Presentation design is used in business meetings, conferences, educational settings, and marketing pitches to help communicate ideas more effectively.

What is the difference between Presentation Design vs Graphic Designer?

AspectPresentation DesignGraphic Designer
CredentialsTypically requires skills in PowerPoint, Keynote, or similar tools; often no formal certification neededUsually holds a degree or certification in graphic design or related fields
Work EnvironmentPrimarily creates visual content for slides, often in corporate or educational settingsDesigns visual content for print, digital media, branding, and advertising
Industry UsageCommonly used in corporate presentations, conferences, and training sessionsUsed across advertising, publishing, branding, and digital media industries

Presentation Design focuses on creating visually engaging slide decks for presentations, emphasizing clarity and visual storytelling. Graphic Designers have a broader scope, designing various visual materials for multiple media. While both roles require strong design skills, Presentation Designers specialize in slide-based content tailored for presentations, whereas Graphic Designers work on diverse visual projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Presentation Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Presentation Designer, you need a strong grasp of visual storytelling, graphic design principles, and proficiency in software like PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Suite, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Expertise in tools such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, and Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you interpret client needs and present information engagingly. These skills are essential for creating clear, visually compelling presentations that effectively communicate messages and engage audiences.

What are some common challenges faced by presentation designers when working with non-design stakeholders?

Presentation designers often collaborate with team members who may not have a design background, which can present challenges in communicating the value of visual hierarchy, branding consistency, and effective storytelling. It's common to encounter requests for last-minute changes or to balance multiple rounds of feedback from various stakeholders. Establishing clear communication, setting expectations early, and providing rationale for design decisions can help foster smoother collaboration and ensure that the final presentation effectively meets both business objectives and audience engagement goals.

About the Role
We are looking for a Presentation Designer who can turn complex technical ideas into compelling, executive-ready stories. You will work closely with the CEO and future sales team to craft high-quality decks for enterprise customers, investors, and strategic stakeholders.

Qualifications:
Must-Haves
2+ years of presentation design experience (or equivalent)
Experience partnering closely with CEO and sales team on customer-facing decks
Comfortable tailoring decks for different buyer personas, including technical users, security leadership, and executive/financial stakeholders, so each audience quickly sees what matters most
Strong grasp of business storytelling frameworks (e.g., Problem โ†’ Impact โ†’ Solution, Before/After) and the ability to shape a clear narrative arc for enterprise audiences
Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Google Slides (beyond the basics): master slides, reusable layouts/components, animation builds for storytelling, and file optimization; familiarity with Figma for diagrams and custom assets
Strong information design skills: translate technical architecture, product workflows, and metrics into digestible diagrams, charts, and infographics - accurate, scannable, and executive-ready
Strong brand systems discipline: work within (and thoughtfully stretch) brand guidelines; excellent typography, color, and layout fundamentals; ability to build and maintain master templates
Comfortable iterating quickly with direct feedback from stakeholders
Nice-to-Haves
Experience in B2B or enterprise environments
Familiarity with the enterprise sales cycle and common sales frameworks (e.g., Challenger, MEDDIC, consultative selling)
Experience structuring slides to proactively address common enterprise objections (e.g., pricing, implementation complexity, competitive differentiation)
Experience working with technical content (AI, security, infrastructure, or data)
Strong with modern AI-assisted design tools to speed up iteration and asset creation
Ability to work onsite at least 3 days per week in the downtown San Francisco
Portfolio Requirement
Please include:
