How much do precision coating jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 2, 2026, the average hourly pay for precision coating in the United States is $19.82, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $20.91 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Precision Coating Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Precision Coating Technician, you need a strong understanding of coating processes, material properties, and precision measurement, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with specialized equipment such as spray guns, cleanroom technology, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication are critical soft skills for maintaining high-quality standards and safety. These competencies ensure precise application, defect minimization, and adherence to industry specifications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in precision coating, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Professionals in precision coating often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent coating thickness and quality across large batches, especially when working with complex or sensitive substrates. Minor variations in temperature, humidity, or equipment calibration can impact the final product. To address these challenges, it is important to follow strict process controls, routinely inspect and maintain equipment, and communicate closely with quality assurance teams. Continuous learning and adherence to standard operating procedures help ensure high-quality, uniform results.

What is precision coating?

Precision coating is the process of applying a controlled, uniform layer of material onto a surface, often used in industries such as electronics, medical devices, optics, and automotive manufacturing. This technique ensures that coatings have consistent thickness, coverage, and performance according to strict specifications. Precision coating can involve various methods, including spraying, roll-to-roll, or dip coating, depending on the application. The goal is to enhance product functionality, durability, or appearance while minimizing waste and defects.

What is the difference between Precision Coating vs Spray Painter?

AspectPrecision CoatingSpray Painter
CertificationsTypically requires coating or finishing certificationsOften requires spray painting certifications or licenses
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, aerospace, automotiveAuto body shops, industrial facilities, construction sites
Job FocusApplying specialized coatings for protection and aestheticsApplying paint via spray for finishing surfaces
Tools & TechniquesSpray guns, brushes, specialized coating equipmentSpray guns, air compressors, masking tools

Precision Coating and Spray Painter roles both involve surface finishing, but Precision Coating focuses on applying specialized protective or functional coatings with high accuracy, often in industrial or aerospace settings. Spray Painters primarily focus on applying paint for aesthetic or protective purposes, commonly in automotive or construction industries. While their tools and environments overlap, their certifications and job objectives differ significantly.

Job description

Description

A Precision Grinder with advanced experience in precision grinding operations and process development. This role is responsible for grinding high-precision ball screw components while developing and maintaining processes capable of achieving extremely tight dimensional and surface finish requirements. The ideal candidate will understand the impact of outside processing and material conditions on final grind geometry and performance.ย

  • Set up, program (where applicable), and operate precision grinding equipment including cylindrical, centerless, thread, and surface grinders
  • Develop grinding processes for precision ball screw components and related assemblies
  • Analyze engineering drawings and process requirements to determine grinding strategy and stock allowances
  • Compensate for dimensional variation resulting from heat treatment, coating, plating, and prior machining operations
  • Establish wheel selection, dressing parameters, and grinding sequences for optimal part quality
  • Perform detailed dimensional and surface finish inspections
  • Troubleshoot grinding issues including taper, chatter, burn, geometry variation, and surface finish defects
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality personnel on process capability and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain process documentation, setup sheets, and inspection records
  • Mentor less experienced machinists and operators
  • Ensure compliance with all quality and safety requirementsย

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of cylindrical, centerless, and thread grinding processes
  • Experience grinding hardened precision components to micron-level tolerances preferred
  • Ability to develop and optimize grinding processes
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills
  • Knowledge of heat treat distortion, stock allowance planning, and material behaviorย

Minimum Competencies:

  • 5+ years of precision grinding experience in a high-tolerance manufacturing environment
  • Experience with advanced inspection methods and precision gauging
  • Strong troubleshooting and process improvement skills
  • ย Ball screw, aerospace, bearing, or motion-control manufacturing experience preferredย
