Industry UsagePrecast concrete industry, construction, architectureStructural engineering, construction, architecture

Precast Detailing focuses on creating detailed drawings for precast concrete elements, ensuring accurate fabrication and installation. Structural Drafting involves creating detailed structural drawings for various building components. While both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, Precast Detailing is specialized in precast concrete, whereas Structural Drafting covers a broader range of structural elements across construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by precast detailers when coordinating with project teams, and how can they be managed?

Precast Detailers often face challenges such as managing changes in architectural or structural designs, ensuring precise coordination with engineers and contractors, and resolving discrepancies between shop drawings and site conditions. Effective communication and utilizing collaborative software tools can help streamline the process, reduce errors, and keep the project on schedule. Regular coordination meetings and proactive issue tracking are key practices to manage these challenges and maintain alignment across project stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a precast detailer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Precast Detailer, you need a strong understanding of construction drawings, structural concepts, and proficiency in AutoCAD or BIM software, usually supported by a degree or diploma in civil engineering or drafting. Familiarity with industry-specific tools like Tekla Structures and knowledge of relevant building codes are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating with engineers, architects, and contractors. These skills ensure accurate, efficient production of precast components and help avoid costly errors in construction projects.

What is precast detailing?

Precast detailing is the process of creating detailed drawings and plans for precast concrete components used in construction projects. These details specify the dimensions, reinforcement, connections, and placement of precast elements such as beams, columns, panels, and slabs. Precast detailers work closely with architects, engineers, and manufacturers to ensure accurate fabrication and installation. Proper detailing is essential for structural integrity, safety, and efficient construction. It also helps prevent costly errors on site by providing clear instructions and coordinating with other building systems.

Job description

Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Precast Designer to develop detailed 3D models, shop drawings, and fabrication documents for precast and prestressed concrete systems used in industrial and commercial construction projects. This role is responsible for translating engineering intent into accurate production-ready drawings while coordinating closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and field teams to support successful fabrication and installation.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with precast concrete detailing, structural drawings, and 3D modeling software, along with a practical understanding of constructability, production processes, and industry standards. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys solving technical challenges and contributing throughout the entire project lifecycle.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is a long-established, privately held construction and specialty precast organization delivering custom structural solutions for complex industrial and commercial facilities. Rather than producing commodity precast products, the company specializes in engineered solutions requiring close collaboration between engineering, detailing, manufacturing, and field operations.

This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects while partnering directly with experienced engineers, production teams, and field personnel. Designers gain exposure to every phase of a project, from initial modeling through fabrication and installation, while building expertise in specialized precast systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed 3D models and shop drawings for precast and prestressed concrete systems using industry-standard CAD software.
  • Produce fabrication drawings for precast components, cast-in-place foundations, reinforcement layouts, and miscellaneous structural elements.
  • Interpret structural, architectural, and MEP drawings to create accurate precast detailing packages.
  • Coordinate with engineers, production personnel, and field teams to ensure drawings support efficient fabrication and successful erection.
  • Revise drawings based on RFIs, engineering changes, and project updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure detailing complies with applicable ACI, PCI, IBC, and project-specific requirements.
  • Support value engineering initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve constructability and production efficiency.
  • Provide technical support during fabrication and field installation to resolve detailing and constructability issues.
  • Assist with mentoring and supporting less experienced detailing personnel while promoting drafting and modeling best practices.
Requirements
  • 5-8 years of experience in precast concrete detailing, structural drafting, or related design environments.
  • Strong experience developing 3D models and shop drawings for structural concrete systems.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, or comparable 3D modeling software.
  • Ability to interpret structural, architectural, and MEP construction drawings.
  • Working knowledge of ACI, PCI, IBC, and common precast detailing standards.
  • Understanding of precast production methods, reinforcement detailing, and erection considerations.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills when working with engineering, manufacturing, and field personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience detailing prestressed concrete systems.
  • Experience supporting fabrication shops or precast manufacturing facilities.
  • Familiarity with industrial construction projects and custom structural precast applications.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is beneficial but not required for this role.
