Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Job Summary
The Veterinary Technician I in Zoo AmbulatoryMedicine at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital willprovide skilled technical and paramedical assistance and nursing care forpatients under general direction of faculty clinicians and may be asked toassist in other areas of the hospital, as well. Due to the teaching nature ofthe hospital, this position will supervise and instruct professional studentsand veterinary technician students in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
PatientCare -
  • Collectowner and patient information, including signalment and medical history
  • Assistfaculty and house officers in providing advanced veterinary care
  • Performpatient restraint as needed
  • Providecare for emergent, non-emergent, and healthy patients
  • Providecare for pre-surgical and post-surgical patients
  • Administerand monitor anesthesia of patients
  • Underdirect or written instructions of the primary clinician, oversee routinepatient care performed by veterinary students
  • Underdirect or written instructions of the primary clinician, perform routinepatient care on patients when veterinary students are unavailable
  • Recognizeand respond appropriately to emergency or critical care situations
  • Collect,store and process diagnostic samples
  • Recordinformation in medical records including SOAP information, vital parameters,test results, discharge instructions, and client communication as needed
  • Monitorhospital orders and treatment orders to ensure completion and compliance,informing clinicians as needed
  • Assistwith zoo animal institutional transfers, including communication with transferfacilities, contract sites, and state veterinarians for all requirements priorto transfer
  • Assistwith animal examinations, complete diagnostics, administer drugs/treatments,and monitor anesthesia under veterinary direction
  • Coordinatesservice schedule, receives and discharges patients
  • Drawsblood, prepares for and assists with diagnostic procedures, provides medicalcare for hospitalized patients, including checking vital signs, cleaningwounds, changing bandages, monitoring incisions, placing catheters,administering medications and treatments as directed, monitoring intake andoutput levels, and exercising patients
  • Coordinatesoperating room turnaround as directed or in accordance with surgical schedules,prepares patients with aseptic technique using knowledge of anatomy andsurgical procedures. Assists clinicians/students with procedures in thesurgical suites
  • Submitspatient requests and completes digital acquisition of requests. Performsstandard procedures per established protocol and techniques includingpresenting and/or positioning patient for study
  • Submitscharges for relevant medical testing and procedures

Facilitiesand Service Maintenance - Clean, stock, and maintain clinical areas
  • Maintainnecessary clinical supplies
  • Maintainsanitary clinical conditions
  • Coordinatewith zoo staff and animal caretakers to address routine and non-routine animalhousing needs
  • Operate,clean, and maintain clinical equipment, including specialized equipment, suchas anesthesia machine, radiology equipment, remote drug delivery equipment
  • Managevehicle (place carpool requests as needed, refill gas, address vehicleconcerns, report mileage for long term rentals)
  • Compileand report case log and visit data to maintain COE to appropriate
  • Anticipateservice/staff supply needs for remote site procedures and ensure appropriatesupplies/equipment are obtained and ready prior to transport, includingcharging battery operated equipment, packing the ambulatory tote, cleaning, andrestocking regularly used equipment. Schedule and coordinateprocedures/supplies with other departments as necessary
  • Comply with federal regulations and university and hospitalpolices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances. Securelymaintain all controlled substances when traveling off site and ensure regularaudits with the VTH Medication Dispensary occur
  • Drive University vehicle to off-site facilities; engage in safedriving practices
  • Providesclient and/or referring veterinarians with information about section/servicearea procedures and the cost of services
  • Assistswith hospital & off-site facility inventory and maintenance, includingcleaning and disinfecting cabinets, carts, counters, sinks and patientcages/stalls as necessary
  • Ordersreplacement supplies, drugs and as needed equipment for service under directionof veterinarian

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
An environment of stress may be anticipated, hence, the person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and fluids will be necessary. To some degree, unpleasantness may be experienced under such conditions. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to man. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused. Skill in performing tasks is required to operate equipment, administer medications, and restrain animals of various species for examination. Syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and must be used with care. The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the technician should be able to lift a 40lb. dog on and off an examination table. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with a large animal (i.e., cattle and horses) during diagnostic or surgical procedures. Minimum Qualifications
  1. Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
  2. Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  3. One (1) year (12 months) of paramedical veterinary experience comparable to that performed at the Veterinary Care Generalist level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
  • Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
  • Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols.
  • Able to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocol and procedures and in the use of equipment or instrumentation.
  • Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs of patients, assess charges observed, and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian.
  • Able to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs and directions of staff and students regarding patients and methods of care.
  • Able to observe, record, compile and assimilate data.
  • Able to explain terminology used in veterinary medicine.
  • Knowledge related to the care and handling of anesthetic waste gases.
  • Able to multi-task, pay close attention to details and work calmly and professionally under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Courteous and polite.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4847 - Veterinary Technician I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Thebudgeted salary range for the position is $25.57/hr. Final salaryoffered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data,internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collectivebargaining agreements, and budget constraints. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for workauthorization.
