Everyone from artists, writers, designers, media buyers, event coordinators, video producers/editors and public relations specialists work together to bring campaigns and product-centric promotions to life. We are looking for a full-time Media Relations Specialist for our headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area.  In this role, you will be responsible for focusing on developing and building relationships and managing communication with journalists and other influencers, for one or more Garmin business segments, including automotive/mobile, aviation, fitness/wellness, outdoor and marine. Lead media and public relations efforts to build awareness of Garmin’s products and facilitate the best possible editorial coverage in print, broadcast and online media.  Other essential functions include:

  • Drive awareness of Garmin’s business segment products and demonstrate their unique advantages of compelling design, superior quality, and best value to members of the media and general public 
  • Work closely with Garmin’s Business Segment Board to develop and execute advanced or complex PR strategies and programs that are aligned with the segment’s goals, including press releases, media advisories, product pitches and company statements and quotes  
  • Communicate applicable strategies and programs to Garmin offices and teams in other countries and assist in translation and localization of messaging when needed 
  • Maintain and grow relationships with media contacts and other influencers throughout the respective industry, including facilitation of review/demo units when applicable, including managing larger, key media relationships 
  • Lead efforts to make Garmin the global leader within the respective market
  • Attend and represent Garmin at industry tradeshows and media events 
  • Plans and executes large media events surrounding new products introductions, tradeshow activites and other special events
  • Communicate a deep understanding of Garmin’s product line and the competitive landscape

Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field from an accredited four year college or university.  Other requirements include:

  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years of public/media relations experience 
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of Garmin products and the market(s) served 
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and presentation skills 
  • Displays compelling writing skills and knowledge of Associated Press style guidelines
  • Exhibits outstanding professionalism, judgment, and integrity
  • Willingness to travel to trade shows and media events
  • Must be a highly organized self-starter able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

Experience in/enthusiasm for navigation, consumer electronics, wireless and activities associated with Garmin products and services as well as experience with digital/social media are highly preferred.
