Own your opportunity to support our nation's defense. Make an impact by connecting and securing critical operations across the globe, keeping our country safe and secure.

Job Description

General Dynamics is seeking a highly skilled Senior Exchange Integration Engineer to join our mission-critical engineering team. In this role, you will bridge the gap between development and production, serving as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Microsoft Exchange across multiple isolated, high-security networks. You will architect, test, and validate configurations in a dedicated laboratory environment, and directly execute the strategic planning, rollout, and lifecycle maintenance across operational production environments.

This role requires a unique balance of rigorous integration lab testing, high-impact Tier 3 escalation support, and strategic engineering planning. Additionally, you will act as a critical troubleshooting liaison for our enterprise users accessing Department of War cloud tenants (DOW365-Joint and DOW365-SEC), collaborating directly with external agency technicians to diagnose and isolate complex access issues impacting our workforce. You will also mentor lower-tier administrators to ensure maximum operational uptime.

HOW A SENIOR EXCHANGE INTEGRATION ENGINEER WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Exchange Architecture: Lead the strategic planning, architectural design, building, and deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server infrastructure in both integration labs and active production environments.

  • Tier 3 Escalation Support: Serve as the ultimate escalation point for complex messaging and collaboration failures in production; perform deep-dive root cause analysis on highly classified networks.

  • Patch Compliance & IAVA Testing: Conduct Information Assurance Vulnerability Alert (IAVA) testing on Exchange and System Center suites in the lab to validate that security patches do not impede production functionality before deployment.

  • Cross-Domain Mail Flow: Maintain, configure, and optimize end-to-end mail flow across separated networks connected via specialized Email Guards; troubleshoot live operational routing anomalies.

  • Automation & Monitoring: Write, maintain, and execute advanced automation scripts utilizing standard PowerShell and Exchange management cmdlets to automate production monitoring, health checks, and simulated mail flow.

  • Workforce Mentorship & Documentation: Author and maintain comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs), deployment guides, and knowledge-base articles; provide technical training and guidance to Tier 1 and Tier 2 system administrators.

  • DOW365 & DISA Troubleshooting Liaison: Assist enterprise users with complex DOW365-Joint and DOW365-SEC access issues. Gather technical data and collaborate directly with Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) technicians to isolate, reproduce, and determine the scope of cloud-tenant anomalies impacting our local workforce (Note: Cloud tenant administration is managed externally).

  • Infrastructure Integration: Configure and manage essential infrastructure dependencies required for production Exchange operations, including Active Directory (AD), Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Group Policies, and Windows Server environments.

WHAT YOULL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and military/work experience).

  • Experience: Minimum of 58 years of direct experience with Microsoft Exchange Server engineering, Windows Server administration, and enterprise-level production support.

  • Security Clearance: Active Top Secret/SCI security clearance is required.

  • U.S. Citizenship: Required due to the nature of the classified work environment.

Required Skills & Technical Competencies

  • Enterprise Messaging: Deep technical expertise in Microsoft Exchange Server architecture, database availability groups (DAG), transport pipelines, and client access protocols in large-scale production environments.

  • Tier 3 Troubleshooting: Advanced diagnostics capability for complex system integration, identity management, and cross-domain communication failures.

  • Directory & Security Infrastructure: Strong proficiency with Active Directory (identity management, schema extensions, replication), PKI (certificate lifecycle, encryption, signing), and Windows Server operating systems.

  • Advanced Scripting: Mastery of PowerShell engineering, specifically utilizing Exchange management cmdlets and legacy cmdlets to build test scripts and custom monitoring frameworks.

  • Technical Writing: Demonstrated experience creating clear deployment, migration, diagrams, and troubleshooting documentation for down-stream operations teams.

  • Cloud-Liaison Capabilities: Strong analytical skills to diagnose client-side connectivity or authentication issues with Microsoft 365 / DOD365 enclaves, coupled with the ability to clearly articulate technical symptoms to external DISA support teams.

Preferred Certifications & Experience

  • Advanced Exchange Engineering: Proven track record of executing full-lifecycle Microsoft Exchange upgrades, schema updates, migrations, and complex disaster recovery procedures.

  • Messaging Certifications: Legacy Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE): Productivity (Messaging focus) or equivalent modern role-based Microsoft Exchange specializations.

  • Performance Tuning: Direct experience with database health management, optimization of index structures, storage allocation, and transaction log troubleshooting for high-availability Exchange environments.

  • Advanced Transport & Hygiene: Deep familiarity with Exchange transport rule architecture, message tracking logs, and deep packet evaluation of SMTP mail flow.

  • DoW Baseline Compliance: DoW 8570 IAT Level II baseline certification (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+, or higher).
