What are some typical challenges faced by Power System Studies Engineers when working on grid integration projects?

Power System Studies Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating renewable energy sources, managing grid stability, and ensuring compliance with evolving industry standards. These projects typically require detailed load flow, short-circuit, and dynamic stability analyses, which can be complex due to varying system conditions and the need to coordinate with utilities, developers, and regulatory bodies. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial, as the role frequently involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver accurate study results and actionable recommendations.

What are Power System Studies Engineers?

Power System Studies Engineers are professionals who analyze and evaluate electrical power systems to ensure their reliability, efficiency, and safety. They conduct various studies, such as load flow, short circuit, stability, and protection coordination, to assess system performance under different conditions. Their work supports the planning, operation, and expansion of power grids, often incorporating renewable energy sources and new technologies. These engineers collaborate with utilities, consultants, and manufacturers to solve power system challenges and improve electrical infrastructure.

What is the difference between Power System Studies Engineer vs Power System Analyst?

AspectPower System Studies EngineerPower System Analyst
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, certifications like P.E. or power system-specific coursesSimilar credentials, often with additional certifications in power analysis or software tools
Work EnvironmentDesigning, analyzing, and validating power system models, often in consulting or utility companiesPerforming detailed power flow, short circuit, and stability studies, typically in engineering firms or utilities
Industry UsageCommonly used in power generation, transmission, and distribution sectorsUsed interchangeably in industry, focusing on system performance and reliability analysis

The Power System Studies Engineer and Power System Analyst roles often overlap in skills and industry usage. Both focus on analyzing electrical power systems, but the engineer typically emphasizes designing and validating systems, while the analyst concentrates on detailed technical studies. Both roles require similar credentials and are vital in ensuring power system stability and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power System Studies Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power System Studies Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, particularly in power systems analysis, often backed by a relevant degree and professional certification (such as PE or EIT). Proficiency with industry-standard software like PSSE, ETAP, or PowerWorld, along with familiarity with grid codes and modeling tools, is essential. Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing, optimizing, and ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical power systems.

Job description

Company Overview:

Electric Power Systems, Inc. (EPS) is an Alaska-based, full-service consulting firm specializing in electrical utility engineering. With offices across Alaska and Washington, we assemble highly-qualified, multidisciplinary teams to provide engineering services that meet the specific needs of our varied utility, government, and private sector clients. EPSโ€™s capabilities span the full spectrum of power and energy related activities including system studies, substation design, protection, transmission line design, transmission and distribution planning and operations, power plant design, amongst others. We focus on delivering timely and economical results with a focus on integrity, relevance, and practicality.

The Studies Group:

The Studies Group is a specialized team within EPS that handles complex technical projects involving modeling, simulation, and transient stability analysis. Although we often conduct study work for clients that operate in the mainland grids, we specialize in the transmission systems and utility-scale generation of islanded power systems. We are experts in the technical challenges associated with these unique systems.

The Studies Group operates as a small but impactful team prioritizing individual caliber, collaboration, and agility over a large headcount. Professional fulfillment in our team is derived from ownership of diverse, interesting, and technically challenging projects. We deliver high-quality analysis that directly impacts the future of the grid, its reliability, and its operation.

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Power Systems Engineer to join our Studies Team in Bremerton, WA. This role offers a unique opportunity to perform and lead electrical system studies focusing on transmission reliability, interconnection, and integration studies for various generation types, and evaluate transmission system performance and compliance issues. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated professional capable of conducting technical studies with limited oversight while fostering our culture of continuous improvement and industry involvement in the face of a rapidly changing grid environment.

Core Responsibilities:

Modeling and Simulation:

โ— Lead technical studies including steady-state power flow, transient stability, short-circuit, and electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis.

โ— Develop and benchmark complex power system models using industry-standard tools such as Siemens PSS/e and PSCAD.

โ— Use, adapt, and develop Python scripts and third-party APIs to leverage automation, optimize data processing, enhance results visualization, and build/assess customized models.

Strategic Technical Analysis:

โ— Evaluate power system performance and compliance with various regional planning standards (e.g. NERC TPL, MOD, PRC, BAL, and FAC).

โ— Understand, evaluate, and provide recommendations related to other industry standards and requirements (e.g. IEEE 2800).

โ— Conduct interconnection studies for inverter-based resources (IBRs) including variable wind and solar resources and utility scale battery systems.

โ— Perform forensic analysis of power systems events, troubleshoot system performance issues and control interactions, and help model and provide recommendations to avoid future issues.

Project Technical Leadership:

โ— Ensure technical deliverables and project timelines are met and that the deliverables meet EPSโ€™s high standards for quality and practicality.

โ— Identify technical risks in study results and propose mitigation strategies.

โ— Prepare technical reports and present project results/findings to varied engineering, management, and business stakeholders.

Requirements and Qualifications:

โ— Education: Receipt of a BSEE from an ABET-accredited college or university. A graduate degree with a focus on power and energy is highly valued.

โ— Professional Status: Professional Engineering (PE) licensure is preferred. Candidates who are Engineers-in-Training (EIT) at the tail-end of their experience requirement and actively pursuing licensure will also be considered.

โ— Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience in power system modeling, simulation, and analysis within a utility or consulting environment. Significant utility, consulting, vendor, or research lab experience is required.

โ— Location: This position is an important role in the growth of our new physical office in Bremerton, WA. Our office is located within walking distance of the Seattle-Bremerton ferry terminal, offering a straightforward commute for those living on the Seattle side. Bremerton offers a competitive cost of living while maintaining immediate access to the broader Puget Sound region. We may be willing to entertain hybrid configuration for the right candidate.

โ— Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States. EPS does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

โ— Screening: Ability and willingness to complete a pre-employment drug test; EPS is a smoke-free and drug-free company.

Benefits:

Electric Power Systems offers a great and competitive total compensation package including:

โ— Insurance: Comprehensive Medical, Dental, Vision, Life insurance, and Long-term Disability.
