How much do power system engineering jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for power system engineering in Texas is $132,360.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $106,200.00 and $161,200.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power System Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like ETAP, PSCAD, MATLAB, and relevant certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are common requirements. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set outstanding engineers apart in this field. These competencies ensure reliable power system design, effective project execution, and safe, efficient operation of electrical grids.

What are the common challenges faced by Power System Engineers when integrating renewable energy sources into existing grids?

Power System Engineers often encounter challenges such as grid stability, variability of renewable sources, and the need for advanced grid management technologies when integrating renewables. Balancing supply and demand becomes more complex due to the intermittent nature of solar and wind power. Engineers must also address issues related to grid protection, voltage regulation, and ensuring reliable power quality, often working closely with cross-functional teams to implement solutions. Staying updated on evolving grid codes and standards is essential for success in this dynamic environment.

What is power system engineering?

Power system engineering is a field of electrical engineering focused on the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electric power. It involves designing and maintaining systems that deliver electricity safely and reliably to homes, businesses, and industries. Power system engineers work on projects such as power plants, substations, and grid integration of renewable energy sources. Their work ensures the stability and efficiency of electrical networks, addressing challenges like load management and fault analysis.

What is the difference between Power System Engineering vs Power Distribution Engineering?

AspectPower System EngineeringPower Distribution Engineering
FocusDesign, analysis, and operation of large-scale electrical power systems including generation, transmission, and distribution networksDesign and implementation of local electrical distribution systems, including substations and feeders for end-users
CertificationsPE license, IEEE certificationsPE license, specialized distribution certifications
Work EnvironmentUtilities, power plants, grid operatorsUtilities, electrical contractors, distribution companies

Power System Engineering focuses on the overall electrical grid, ensuring reliable power transmission and generation. Power Distribution Engineering concentrates on local distribution networks that deliver electricity to consumers. Both roles require similar credentials and often work within the utility industry, but their scope and focus differ significantly.

Job description

We are designing the grid of the future!ย

EPE is growing its Energy Resources team and is looking for a technical authority in EMT modelling and power system studies. You'll deliver complex study programs for generation, large load, and merchant transmission clients, mentor junior engineers, and help shape EPE's AI-augmented engineering practice

Howย you can make an impact

  • EMT & steady-state studiesย โ€” execute client-ready deliverables thatย meet project objectivesย on time and on budget
  • Dynamic model developmentย โ€” generator/load/equipmentย models tuned and benchmarked against field data in PSCAD/PSS/E
  • Client advisoryย โ€” translate complex results into decisions that move projects forward
  • Team growthย โ€” measurably develop junior engineers through mentorship and technical review
  • AI-augmented workflowsย โ€” lead adoption of AI-assisted simulation, automated QA, and LLM-driven reporting tools within the team

You Have Deep Experience In At Least One Of:

  • Data center power systemsย โ€” large load dynamics, equipment modelling, power quality
  • Conventional or IBR generationย โ€” machine dynamics, control system tuning, disturbance ride-through
  • Designย studiesย โ€” TOV,ย TRV,ย switching overvoltage, insulation coordination,ย lightning overvoltage, harmonics, flicker, energization

Bring your passion, here's whatโ€™s needed:

  • 8+ years in power system modelling and studies
  • B.Sc. or higher in Electrical Engineering (power systems focus)
  • Proficiency in PSCAD, PSS/E, ETAP, or equivalents; additional tools (CDEGS, EMTP, PowerFactory) are a plus
  • Scripting skills (Python or MATLAB) for workflow automation and simulation data processing
  • Working knowledge of IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE standards
  • Ability to champion the adoption of AI and automation tools within the team, building internal capacity and establishing best practices for AI-augmented engineering workflows.

Be a part of an innovative team shaping the grid of the future through advanced energy intelligence.ย  For more than half a century, Electric Power Engineers (EPE) has partnered with power and energy clients across the globe, providing consulting expertise and energy intelligence software solutions for complex engineering and grid modeling challenges. As leaders in the renewables space, we are focused on building a modern, secure, and resilient grid. ย ย Join us in making an impact on the communities we serve and the environment in which we live. Together we can transform the future of energy. ย

ย

How we support you:

  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits including medical, dental, and vision with 100% premium coverage forย you
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • MyShare Employee Ownership Program
  • Work with industry leaders
  • 401K, up to a 4% match (100% vested from day 1)

Location: This position is remote and open to US or Canada

Travel:ย  Occasional travel may be needed (10% or less)
