What you'll do:
Job Summary:
Eaton's Research Lab (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position as an Engineering Specialist in Energy Systems to support research and technology development in power grid intelligence programs. This position will be based at our Golden, Colorado office.
The primary role of this position is to lead research and development efforts into cutting edge power grid technologies on grid automation, cyber-physical security/resiliency, grid computation, communications, and power grids protection.
Position Overview:
Eaton is a power management company made up of over 92,000 employees, doing business in more than 175 countries. The ERL is a corporate R&D function within Eaton's Chief Technology Office, responsible for innovative and breakthrough technology development and commercialization for Eaton products and service solutions.
This position will lead research and development in electric power grid domains to drive technology advancement in the areas of grid edge intelligence, protection, cyber security, computation and grid resilience. The successful candidate will perform leading roles in technology projects and other activities, including strategic business unit discussions/alignment, fostering academic and utility partner collaboration, and representing Eaton in public occasions such as conferences and working groups.

In this role you will:
• Serve as a domain expert and leader in research, technology development and demonstration.
• Perform as project lead with responsibilities to ensure technical flow, track on project milestones, coordinate and mentor project team members.
• Lead and contribute to the value proposition development for technical projects and programs.
• Lead and contribute to government proposal preparation and project execution.
• Play a pivotal role in fostering business relationships by presenting ideas and projects, participating in ideation events, acquiring resources and funding.
• Execute essential functions in in cultivating external partnerships and aligning with outside technological advancements.
• Develop as an industry recognized subject matter expert through active participation in conferences, seminars, standard bodies, and relevant industrial/academic consortium meetings to drive Eaton's innovation leadership.
• Lead and contribute to IP generation through authoring/co-authoring disclosures and patents.
• Effectively apply appropriate processes, systems, and tools.
• Mentor junior staff and coordinate with other Eaton divisions.
Qualifications:
Required (Basic) Qualifications:
• PhD graduating of May 2026 or before in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution, with four (4) years of progressive experience in researching, developing and designing technology solutions. Demonstrated success in delivering commercially viable high-quality technological innovations.
• Exceptional Master graduating of May 2026 or before with at least nine (9) years of experience will also be considered.
• Demonstrated strong experience in 2 or more of the following areas:
- Power grid modeling, simulation and analysis
- Power system protection
- DC system modeling and simulation
- Grid computation such as leveraging high performance computers, quantum computing
- Grid resilience, grid edge control, substation automation
- AI/Machine Learning, cyber-physical security and data analytics
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future
Preferred Qualifications
• Combined academic and industry expertise in above-mentioned areas
• Hands-on experience with field or lab testing
• Familiarity and experience with corporate research and development workstyle, technical presentation, idea proposing and project execution
• Demonstrated ability to build new research programs by working collaboratively with others across a broad spectrum of disciplines to accomplish strategic goals
• Experience in proposal development and government funded programs (e.g., DoE, DoD, and other government agencies)
