Power Electronics Engineer - Underwater Maritime Systems | Concord, MA or Groton, CT

Join our innovative Sensing and Communications Department as a Power Electronics Engineer, where you'll design cutting-edge high-power electronics systems for advanced underwater maritime applications. This position offers the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art unmanned underwater vehicles, acoustic communication systems, and electromechanical actuation systems in either Concord, Massachusetts or Groton, Connecticut.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, integrate, and debug complex power electronics systems for underwater maritime applications
  • Engineer DC/DC converters, AC/DC power systems, and power amplifiers ranging from 500W to 50kW for harsh operating environments
  • Develop high voltage and high power electrical components for prototype R&D systems
  • Design energy storage system components and magnetics for underwater applications
  • Interface power electronics with embedded processors and control systems
  • Perform circuit analysis, simulation, component selection, schematic capture, and PCB design
  • Conduct verification testing and troubleshooting of electronic systems
  • Collaborate with layout vendors and manage PCB implementation processes
  • Design for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and integrate high-power components into larger systems
  • Support on-site testing and customer demonstrations (up to 25% travel)
  • Mentor junior electrical engineering staff on electronics design and board troubleshooting
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with concentration in power systems design or power electronics
  • BSEE with 4+ years of relevant power electronics experience, OR MSEE/PhD with 1+ years of relevant experience
  • Proven track record designing, implementing, and testing high voltage/high power electrical systems
  • Hands-on experience with DC/DC and AC/DC power system design for harsh environments (500W to 50kW)
  • Expertise with electronic power devices including MOSFETs, Schottky Diodes, SiC FETs, and IGBTs
  • Demonstrated experience designing electromechanical actuators, DC/DC converters, power amplifiers, and magnetics
  • Experience with high availability power supplies and failover systems
  • Strong skills in circuit analysis and simulation, component selection, schematic capture, and verification testing
  • Proficiency troubleshooting electronic systems using laboratory test equipment (DMM, oscilloscope, function generator, voltage/current probes)
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB for data analysis
  • PCB design experience or experience managing layout vendors
  • Familiarity with electronics assembly, wiring, crimping, and soldering techniques
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience designing electronics for underwater maritime systems, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), or marine robotics
  • Experience designing electric machines, motor drives, and motor control systems
  • Background working with acoustic transducers and acoustic communication systems
  • In-depth knowledge of power converter topologies (buck, boost, flyback, SEPIC, forward converters) and control methodologies
  • Experience with EMC design and testing for high-power systems
  • Oversight experience with electronic layout, bill-of-materials management, and assembly processes
  • Track record creating technical content for new products, proposals, or business development initiatives
  • Experience working in R&D environments and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Programming skills in C/C++ or Python for microcontrollers and embedded platforms
  • Experience briefing customers and presenting technical information
