Job description

Title: Automation Engineer

Location: Raleigh, NC

The Automation Engineer will support the AI Solutions & Automation pillar by designing, building, and maintaining workflow automations, system-connected business processes, alerts, task routing, and AI-enabled process automations across CBS. This role is focused on digital business-process automation, not ownership of industrial equipment controls or core data platform architecture.

The Automation Engineer will work closely with the AI Lead, AI Solutions Architect, Transformation PMO, Information Systems Lead, Data Engineer, Business Analyst, functional leaders, and Federated Center of Excellence champions. The role will convert high-value manual workflows into reliable, monitored, supportable automation solutions using approved enterprise tools, APIs, data sources, and governance standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain workflow automations that reduce manual handoffs, spreadsheet dependency, duplicate data entry, and email-driven coordination.
  • Develop business-process automations across functions such as engineering, NPI, operations, quality, supply chain, finance, and commercial teams.
  • Build automations using approved platforms such as Microsoft Power Automate, Power Apps, Logic Apps, Dataverse, SharePoint, Teams, APIs, scripts, and related enterprise automation tools.
  • Partner with the AI Lead and AI Solutions Architect to connect AI outputs, agents, copilots, summaries, classifications, and recommendations into governed business workflows where appropriate.
  • Partner with the IS Lead and Data Engineer to consume trusted data sources, APIs, lakehouse outputs, dashboards, and system events required to trigger or support automations.
  • Partner with the Business Analyst, Transformation PMO, and functional stakeholders to map current-state processes, identify automation opportunities, define requirements, and validate future-state workflows.
  • Develop reusable workflow patterns, approval flows, exception alerts, escalation logic, task routing, automated reporting distribution, and notification frameworks.
  • Implement logging, error handling, exception management, monitoring, documentation, and sustainment practices for production automations.
  • Ensure automations comply with security, access control, data governance, responsible AI, and change-management requirements.
  • Support pilot deployment, user acceptance testing, training, adoption, feedback collection, and post-launch improvements in partnership with functional champions.
  • Troubleshoot workflow failures, integration issues, permissions errors, source-system changes, and automation performance problems.
  • Evaluate opportunities to use low-code/no-code, scripting, APIs, robotic process automation, or AI-enabled workflow orchestration based on business value, reliability, maintainability, and governance needs.
  • Support implementation partners and vendors where external support is required for automation design, build, integration, or scale-up.
  • Travel as required to support global operations and deployment activities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to support the growth and success of the business.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Automation, or related field; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
  • 3-7+ years of experience building workflow automations, business-process automations, integrations, low-code/no-code applications, or API-connected digital solutions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform, Power Automate, Power Apps, Dataverse, SharePoint, Teams, Azure Logic Apps, Azure Functions, or comparable workflow automation platforms.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, connectors, webhooks, data triggers, scheduled workflows, approvals, notifications, and exception-handling patterns.
  • Experience with SQL basics and scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript, or PowerShell preferred.
  • Ability to map business processes, identify automation opportunities, define workflow requirements, and translate business needs into reliable technical solutions.
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems such as ERP, MES, PLM, QMS, Microsoft 365, and cloud data platforms preferred.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled workflows, agents, copilots, document processing, or intelligent automation concepts preferred.
  • Experience with security, permissions, access control, documentation, testing, monitoring, and sustainment of production workflows.
  • Manufacturing, engineering, operations, quality, or supply chain process experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication, troubleshooting, stakeholder management, and continuous improvement skills.
  • Ability to work across business functions, technical teams, and external implementation partners.
  • Travel required as needed to support global sites and automation deployment activities.
