Essential Job Duties
The Head of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science will advance the department's land-grant mission by providing strategic and operational leadership to build capacity, strengthen infrastructure, facilitate the success of faculty, staff, and students, and translate the department's value to institutional and external stakeholders.
The Head of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science has overall responsibility for the leadership and administration of all teaching, extension, and research activities in the Department.
The Department Head for Prestage Department of Poultry Science will:
  • Advance the department's academic, research, and extension programs in alignment with the CALS' Growing Our Future Strategic Plan, by defining innovative excellence that ensures long-term impact across the poultry value chain.
  • Lead strategic initiatives to recruit, mentor, and retain a high-impact community of faculty, staff, and students, ensuring junior faculty are supported through successful promotion and tenure.
  • Oversee departmental finances, facilities, and research infrastructure, including the research farms, ensuring transparent fiscal responsibility, with a focus on sustainability, modernization, and equitable access that maximizes impact of the Prestage endowment.
  • Work with faculty to increase the numbers of, and total research support from state, federal, and private foundations, as well as working with college and university advancement to identify other sources of funding for departmental programs.
  • Foster deep, collaborative partnerships with North Carolina commodity groups and stakeholders through the communication of relevant research and extension.
  • Establish, lead, and maintain a high-functioning external advisory board that represents varied sectors of the poultry, animal health, and other relevant allied industries to provide strategic guidance and strengthen industry engagement.
  • Serve as a strong advocate for the department's mission, needs, and strategic priorities within CALS, across the University, and within the broader professional and commercial community, while promoting collaborative opportunities across the University.
  • Provide full-time administrative leadership that is transparent, accountable, and reduces the administrative burden on faculty and staff, leading to a unified environment where faculty, staff, and students can flourish.
  • Establish and uphold consistent standards of quality and performance across varied faculty roles and responsibilities. as well as support pre-tenure faculty through the promotion and tenure process in a manner that maximizes potential for success.
  • Expand and strengthen academic programs across the department, including the poultry science undergraduate pathways (Agricultural Institute and four-year degrees), as well as the graduate programs in both poultry science and physiology.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD, a DVM/PhD, or equivalent professional experience for appointment as a tenured professor at NC State.
  • Record of professional achievement related to poultry science or allied disciplines.
  • Evidence of leadership, management, and communication skills in complex academic or research environments.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Understanding and appreciation of the land-grant mission.
  • Effective communication with faculty, staff, students, administrators, agencies, NGOs, and the public.
