Postdoctoral Position In Peptide Synthesis information

What is a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis?

A Postdoctoral Position in Peptide Synthesis is a research-focused role for individuals who have recently completed their Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. The primary responsibility is to design, synthesize, and characterize peptides for various scientific studies, often in drug discovery or biomedical research. Postdocs in this area may also be involved in developing new synthetic methodologies, analyzing experimental data, and publishing their findings. These roles typically provide training and experience necessary for an academic or industry career in chemical and biological sciences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis?

To thrive in a Postdoctoral Position in Peptide Synthesis, you need a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field with a solid background in peptide synthesis and purification techniques. Experience with analytical tools such as HPLC, mass spectrometry, and peptide synthesizers, as well as familiarity with relevant software, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication skills help you excel in multidisciplinary research environments. These skills ensure the successful design, synthesis, and analysis of peptides, contributing to impactful research outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced in a postdoctoral position in peptide synthesis, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in peptide synthesis often encounter challenges such as optimizing synthetic routes for complex peptides, managing the purification of difficult sequences, and troubleshooting low yields or unexpected side reactions. These hurdles can be addressed by staying current with the latest literature, using advanced purification techniques like HPLC, and collaborating closely with other chemists or biochemists in the lab. Open communication with mentors and team members also helps in brainstorming solutions and sharing best practices, fostering a collaborative environment that is essential for overcoming technical obstacles.

Job description

Associate Director (Peptidomimetics), R&D Chemistry

We are currently seeking an established leader and drug hunter to expand Regeneron’s peptidomimetic antibody‑conjugate drug discovery capabilities. The Associate Director will drive discovery across diverse research areas and integrate with the company’s expertise in biologics and novel genetic medicines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise and manage the day‑to‑day activities of the R&D Chemistry Peptidomimetic group, establishing short‑term and long‑term goals.
  • Communicate Regeneron senior leaders’ priorities, policies, and goals to the team.
  • Drive medicinal‑chemistry‑inspired, SAR‑driven generation of novel peptidomimetic drug modalities using synthetically feasible and simplistically designed linkers to achieve optimal in vitro and in vivo properties of antibody‑conjugated therapeutics.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize peptide potency and stability using standard peptide‑based principles (e.g., Ala scans), non‑natural amino acid incorporation, backbone modifications, and medicinal‑chemistry strategies guided by in vitro assays, plasma/serum stability, and metabolic ID data.
  • Champion and lead the R&D Chemistry Peptidomimetic efforts on internal and external project teams, demonstrating the ability to multi‑task and manage parallel projects to contribute to Regeneron’s development pipeline.
  • Identify new strategies and technologies—linker and payload design—to improve existing Regeneron platforms for peptidomimetic synthesis and bioconjugation.
  • Participate in departmental, cross‑functional, and external meetings to contribute expertise and represent the group’s vision.
  • Interact broadly and collaboratively with other Regeneron groups, forging relationships and active collaborations.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in peptide, synthetic organic chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10years of professional industry experience.
  • Extensive drug discovery experience with antibody‑targeted peptidomimetic drug modalities.
  • Experience with the synthesis and manufacturing of peptidomimetic payloads and linkers.
  • Expertise in modern medicinal‑chemistry structure‑activity relationship (SAR) methods.
  • Deep understanding of biological modes of action (extracellular/intracellular target evaluation, ADME/PK, PD/efficacy, toxicological evaluation).
  • Track record of success in advancing peptidomimetics, small molecules, or antibody‑targeted therapeutics into the clinic and leading teams.
Location

This is an on‑site position located in our Hawthorne, NY facility. Occasional travel to the nearby Tarrytown facility may be required.
