Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction information

What is a postdoctoral human computer interaction researcher?

Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers are scholars who have completed their PhD and are conducting advanced, independent research in the field of HCI. Their work focuses on understanding how people interact with computers and designing technology that improves those interactions. Postdoctoral HCI researchers often work at universities or research institutions, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to explore topics such as usability, user experience, accessibility, and emerging technologies. They contribute to scientific knowledge through publications and may also mentor students or assist with grant writing. This role helps prepare them for academic, industry, or research leadership positions.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral human computer interaction researchers, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in HCI often encounter challenges such as balancing independent research with collaborative projects, managing multidisciplinary teams, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies. Navigating these challenges requires strong time management, proactive communication with advisors and colleagues, and staying engaged with the broader HCI community through conferences and seminars. Building a strong professional network and seeking mentorship can also help postdocs identify new opportunities and career directions within academia, industry, or user experience research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral human computer interaction researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Human Computer Interaction researcher, you typically need a Ph.D. in HCI, Computer Science, or a related field, along with a solid background in user-centered design and empirical research methods. Proficiency with prototyping tools, statistical analysis software (such as SPSS or R), and experience in conducting user studies are commonly required. Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills set candidates apart, as they enable effective teamwork and dissemination of research findings. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing innovative research, publishing impactful work, and contributing to multidisciplinary projects.

The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, user-focused, and comfortable working across multiple products and stakeholder groups.

Responsibilities
  • Partner closely with Product Managers and business stakeholders to gather, understand, and translate requirements into user-centered solutions.
  • Design wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes to communicate design concepts and workflows.
  • Plan and execute usability testing sessions, analyze findings, and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Conduct user research and develop user personas to guide product and design decisions.
  • Map user journeys, identify pain points, and uncover opportunities to improve the overall user experience.
  • Present research findings, design recommendations, and UX solutions to stakeholders and project teams.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to ensure design intent and user experience standards are successfully implemented.
  • Contribute to and maintain UX standards, design systems, and reusable design assets.
  • Support multiple products and initiatives while balancing competing priorities and stakeholder needs.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as operational needs evolve.
  • Occasionally work outside standard business hours to support project milestones, releases, or critical business initiatives.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design, Human Factors, Design, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional UX design experience.
  • Strong ability to manage and prioritize work across multiple products, projects, and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative problem-solving with established UX standards and best practices.
  • Strong UX research, usability testing, and user interview experience.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and WCAG guidelines.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively across Product, Engineering, and Business teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining reusable design systems and component libraries in Figma.
  • Familiarity with responsive and enterprise application design patterns.
  • Basic front-end development knowledge, including HTML, CSS, and modern web technologies.
  • Experience working within Agile product development environments.
