What is the difference between Postdoctoral Fellow Nurse vs Clinical Research Nurse?

AspectPostdoctoral Fellow NurseClinical Research Nurse
CredentialsDoctoral degree (PhD, DNP) often requiredRegistered Nurse (RN) license, possibly with research certification
Work EnvironmentAcademic institutions, research labs, universitiesHospitals, clinics, research sites
Employer & IndustryUniversities, research organizationsHealthcare facilities, clinical research organizations
Primary FocusConducting research, publishing findings, academic advancementManaging clinical trials, patient care, data collection

In summary, a Postdoctoral Fellow Nurse typically holds a doctoral degree and focuses on research within academic settings, whereas a Clinical Research Nurse is a licensed RN working in clinical environments to support and manage research studies involving patients.

What are some common challenges faced by a postdoctoral fellow nurse when transitioning from clinical practice to research-focused roles?

Postdoctoral Fellow Nurses often encounter challenges shifting from direct patient care to research settings, such as adapting to more independent work, mastering advanced research methodologies, and balancing multiple projects with strict deadlines. Adjusting to a less structured environment and learning to collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams can also be an initial hurdle. However, these challenges are valuable opportunities for professional growth, expanding both research expertise and leadership skills within academic or healthcare institutions.

What is a postdoctoral fellow nurse?

A Postdoctoral Fellow Nurse is a registered nurse who has completed a doctoral degree, such as a PhD or DNP, and is engaged in advanced research or scholarly training after their doctorate. These fellowships allow nurses to deepen their expertise in a specialized area, contribute to research projects, and develop skills for academic or leadership roles. Postdoctoral fellow nurses often work in universities, research institutions, or healthcare organizations, collaborating on studies that advance nursing science and patient care.

Job description

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Department of Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow in the Molecular Genomics Laboratory.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will focus on the development of novel genomic assays into the laboratory consistent with diagnostic efforts in Thoracic Oncology. The assays are anticipated to predominantly utilize next-generation sequencing (NGS) methodologies, though other technologies may also be employed where applicable. The candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in cross laboratory/technology collaborations, and will be expected to present findings at internal and external forums. The candidate will have the opportunity to partake in collaborative research studies with faculty in the Department of Pathology and Center for Thoracic Oncology at the Tisch Cancer Institute (TCI).

The candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field with a deep bench-level working knowledge of genomics in oncology. Prior experience is preferred in cfDNA-based NGS assays and a broad understanding of the application of other molecular technologies. In addition, the candidate must have excellent communication skills (verbal and writing), be highly organized and timeline-driven, and be a strong team member.

The Molecular Genomics Laboratory currently performs molecular testing to service both oncology and non-oncology conditions using a variety of molecular technologies. The Department is a rapidly growing, dynamic, progressive academic department committed to managing knowledge and improving patient care. The Molecular Pathology Division of the Pathology Department currently comprises four specialty laboratories supported by a dedicated team of allied health staff and state of the art laboratory infrastructure including flow cytometry, transplant and regenerative pathology, cytogenomics, and molecular genomics/genetics laboratories. The Center for Thoracic Oncology/TCI is a multidisciplinary center focusing on research in lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies and includes faculties from all clinical cancer disciplines as well as faculty members from basic and translational research labs.

Interested applicants should submit their application and C.V. including names of three potential references to:
