How much do postdoctoral chemical engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral chemical engineering in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical collaborative projects a Postdoctoral Chemical Engineering researcher may be involved in?

Postdoctoral researchers in Chemical Engineering often collaborate on multidisciplinary projects that span across material science, biology, and process engineering. They may work with faculty members, graduate students, and industry partners on tasks such as developing new catalysts, optimizing reaction pathways, or scaling up laboratory processes to pilot plant scale. These collaborations provide valuable opportunities to contribute specialized expertise while also learning from colleagues in related fields. Engaging in such projects helps postdocs expand their professional network and can open doors to future research or industry roles.

What are Postdoctoral Chemical Engineers?

Postdoctoral Chemical Engineers are researchers who have completed their PhD in chemical engineering or a related field and are engaged in further specialized research, typically at a university or research institution. They work on advanced projects, often as part of a team, to develop new materials, processes, or technologies. Their responsibilities can include designing experiments, analyzing data, publishing research findings, mentoring students, and collaborating with other scientists. The position is typically temporary and helps prepare them for independent research careers in academia, industry, or government.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Chemical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Chemical Engineer, you need a PhD in chemical engineering or a related field, with expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and advanced research techniques. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, chemical process simulation software, and relevant safety protocols is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you effectively convey findings and work within multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing innovative research, ensuring safety, and achieving impactful scientific outcomes.

Job description

About the Opportunity
JOB SUMMARY
The Dong Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Lab at Northeastern University seeks an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to start as soon as possible. The research focus will be on developing and applying first-principles-based and data-driven computational methods to understand multiscale processes and to accelerate chemical discoveries for renewable energy, biomedicine, and other areas of societal importance. Coding and/or machine learning experiences are highly valued. Specific projects may involve developing multiscale simulation methods for quantum mechanical properties of macromolecules, developing novel ways to combine quantum chemical methods and machine learning, developing quantum algorithms for computational chemistry on quantum computers, and applying existing and new computational methods to study multiscale processes in catalysis and photochemistry. Other projects that align with our general interest are also possible. Please see https://sdonglab.org/ for further details.
The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to conduct research. The postdoc is also expected to write research papers, present research at meetings, contribute to research proposals, manage research data and software, and assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications should contain a cover letter briefly describing the candidate's research experience and interests, a full CV with a publication list, names of at least three references, and Ph.D. completion date. Review of applications will be on a rolling basis.
The position will remain open until filled. The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for extension depending on regular progress evaluation and continuation of funding.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or a closely related field.
The candidate should have strong problem-solving skills and be highly motivated. Programming skills (Python or Fortran preferred, but not required) are desired. Experiences with catalysis (biological, homogeneous, or heterogeneous), excited-state simulation methods, multiscale simulations (broadly defined), molecular dynamics simulations, sampling techniques, machine learning, or quantum computing are big pluses. The candidate should have good communication skills, both oral and written, and are willing to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
Position Type
Research
Additional Information
