How much do post doctoral jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for post doctoral in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Post Doctoral vs Research Scientist?

Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutionsCorporations, government agencies, academia
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Post Doctoral positions are typically research roles held after earning a PhD, mainly in academic or research institutions. Research Scientists may have similar credentials but often work in industry or applied research settings. While both roles involve conducting research, Post Doctorals focus on gaining additional expertise and publishing, whereas Research Scientists may be involved in product development or applied projects.

What are Post Doctoral positions?

Post Doctoral positions, often called postdocs, are temporary research roles that individuals take after completing their doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent). These positions allow scholars to deepen their expertise, conduct independent research, and contribute to academic publications under the mentorship of senior researchers. Postdocs are common in academia and research institutions and often serve as a stepping stone to permanent faculty or research positions. The duration of a postdoc can range from one to several years depending on the field and funding. Responsibilities typically include conducting experiments, publishing papers, and sometimes teaching or mentoring students.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher, you need a doctorate in a relevant field, strong research methodology skills, and a proven record of scientific publications. Proficiency with statistical software, laboratory equipment, and grant writing platforms is often required. Excellent analytical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills help set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are critical for conducting high-impact research, securing funding, and building a successful academic or industry career.

What are some common challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers when transitioning to independent research roles?

Postdoctoral researchers often face challenges such as securing independent funding, building a unique research niche, and balancing competing demands like publishing, teaching, and networking. Navigating the shift from working under a principal investigator to leading their own projects requires developing grant-writing skills and establishing a track record of publications. Additionally, postdocs must actively seek mentorship and collaboration opportunities, as networking within their academic community can be crucial for career advancement into faculty or industry roles.

Job description

University of Colorado AnschutzDepartment: SOM, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics Job Title: Post-Doctoral FellowPosition #00834006: - Requisition #:39113

Job Summary:

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available immediately in the laboratory of Elan Eisenmesser at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (Anschutz Medical Campus).

The Eisenmesser laboratory is located in a highly collaborative structural biology environment with access to:

  • Bruker 600 MHz and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers with cryoprobes
  • An on-site 200 kV Talos Arctica cryo-EM facility
  • Proteomics and metabolomics mass spectrometry cores
  • A comprehensive biophysics core facility

All major instrumentation is located in the same building.

Key Responsibilities:

Our group uses an integrative structural biology approach to understand how macromolecular structure and dynamics control function in systems relevant to infectious disease. We combine:

  • Solution NMR spectroscopy (structure, dynamics)
  • Cryo-EM of large macromolecular assemblies
  • Biochemistry and molecular biology

Current projects include:

  1. Bacterial proteases that manipulate host pathways, with emphasis on conformational exchange and its role in enzyme mechanisms.
  2. Macromolecular assemblies involved in microbial metabolism with a particular focus on protein-protein regulatory mechanisms.

The successful candidate will apply advanced NMR methods and develop cryo-EM expertise to study structure-dynamics-function relationships in these systems.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Why Join Us:

Our department conducts research across a wide biological scale for fundamental scientific understanding with applications to many disease contexts. The overarching goal is to reach a level of molecular insight that helps develop therapeutic approaches to disease.

As biochemists and molecular geneticists, we are amid an unprecedented time of discovery - our conception of the molecular biology of cells is going from the equivalent of grainy black-and-white to high-resolution technicolor. From deciphering the choreography of transcription complexes, chromosomes, and RNA molecules within cells to developing novel approaches to 3D molecular structure determination to understanding how viruses hijack a cell's machinery and alter its metabolome, the researchers in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) are at the forefronts of their fields both conceptually and technologically.
