Job description

Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school with 1,650 students in preschool through 12th grade. The Facilities Department has openings for the position of Groundskeeper, to start immediately.

This position reports directly to the Grounds Manager and works closely with other Facilities employees. This is a 12-month, full-time non-exempt position with benefits including health insurance, paid leave, school-provided lunch, and availability of 403(b) retirement plan.

The Groundskeeper is responsible for performing duties to maintain the grounds of the School property using hand or power tools or equipment. Other duties may include supporting special events by assisting with table and chair setups, erecting tents, and grounds maintenance after the event.

Flexibility is essential. This position will/may be required to work when the School is closed which may include holidays, weekends and extended hours in summer. Availability to attend events at any/all of the three Porter-Gaud/O'Quinn campuses, during both regular and off work hours is required.


Specific Duties include:

- Responsible for maintenance of all lawns, athletics fields, plantings, trees and paved areas of the Porter-Gaud Campus.

- Responsible for safe operation of all landscape maintenance equipment.

- Compliance with all applicable safety regulations.

- Compliance with all department rules, as specified in the Employee Handbook.

- Other duties as assigned by Grounds Manager, Plant Manager and/or Director of Facilities.


Required skills:

- Must be able to follow directions.

- Must be able to operate all landscaping equipment in a safe manner.

- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

- Knowledge of irrigation systems, fertilization, and herbicides (preferred).

- Be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

- Must be able to work efficiently and independently.


Minimum Job Qualifications:

- 2+ years experience in landscape maintenance or landscape construction.

- Valid SC Driver's license and acceptable MVR.

- High School Diploma preferred, but not required.


Physical requirements:


- Frequently lifting 10-20 pounds, occasionally lifting 50 pounds.
- Continuously demands vision, hearing, fine motor skills, and speaking. Frequently sitting, standing, walking and carrying. Occasionally bending, lifting, crouching and climbing.
- Work is performed mostly outdoors with exposure to heat, humidity, and cold.


Salary: Commensurate with experience ; $19-23/ hour
