Consumers can verify their identity with ID.me once and seamlessly login across websites without having to create a new login and verify their identity again. Over 152 million users experience streamlined login and identity verification with ID.me at 20 federal agencies, 45 state government agencies, and 70+ healthcare organizations. More than 600+ consumer brands use ID.me to verify communities and user segments to honor service and build more authentic relationships. ID.me’s technology meets the federal standards for consumer authentication set by the Commerce Department and is approved as a NIST 800-63-3 IAL2 / AAL2 credential service provider by the Kantara Initiative. ID.me is a full-time, in-office culture. Unless a specific job description explicitly states otherwise, all roles are on-site five days per week at one of our offices in McLean, VA; Mountain View, CA; New York City, NY; or Tampa, FL. Certain roles — such as field-based sales or other remote-by-design positions — may have different work arrangements as noted in their individual postings.

At ID.me, we embrace the thoughtful use of AI tools in our daily work and there are even occasions where we leverage AI in our hiring process. However, during the interview process, we want to understand your individual skills and experiences. Therefore, we have guidelines on how AI can be appropriately used during your application and interviews which can be found here.

Role Overview

ID.me is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (SDE-IV) to join the Developer Portal team, where we're building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate trusted identity verification.

Identity proofing is fundamentally complex and integrating an identity proofing flow requires many steps while meeting standard bodies assurance requirements.

The Developer Portal at ID.me is the product that brings the pieces together for the external developer.

Today, much of that onboarding is still performed manually through in-house Solutions Consultants that have many other responsibilities. Our mission is to enable customers and their developers to register their application, configure their identity needs, test in a production-like sandbox, and launch to production—all through a modern self-service experience.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will own a significant portion of that platform end-to-end. You'll independently drive medium-to-large initiatives from ambiguous problem definition through production, serve as the technical owner for the systems you build, and help define the future of how developers integrate with ID.me.

You'll work across a modern micro-frontend platform built with Next.js and React, alongside Java backend other legacy services (mostly Ruby) powering identity, organizations, applications, authorization, and developer APIs. Previous Java and Ruby experience is welcome but not required—we value engineers who are comfortable learning whatever technology the problem requires.

This position is based in our Mountain View, CA office five days per week.

Key Responsibilities
Build Self-Service Developer Experiences

Design, build, and operate the experiences that allow customers to onboard themselves to the ID.me platform. Take loosely defined problems, collaborate with Product and Design to clarify requirements, and independently deliver production-ready solutions from design through launch.

Own the Developer Experience

Treat time first successful self-service onboarding, that results first time successful verification by their customers, as the team's north-star metric

Build Platform Infrastructure

Extend the platform powering the Developer Portal, including:

  • Micro-frontends

  • Micro-service backends

  • Shared UI component libraries

  • Feature-flag driven migrations

  • Versioned API contracts for our customers

Authentication, Authorization & Identity

Build secure Developer Portal capabilities, including:

  • OAuth 2.0

  • OpenID Connect

  • Enterprise SSO

  • Multi-tenant authorization

  • Relationship-based access control

  • Session management

  • Credential management

  • Identity-aware application provisioning

Partner closely with our Identity, Organizations, Authorization, and Platform Engineering teams to evolve these capabilities without disrupting existing integrations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience building and operating production web applications. [Less for PHD, Masters]

  • 3+ years of experience building developer-facing platforms such as developer portals, API platforms, authentication platforms, cloud platforms, payments platforms, or other self-service developer experiences.

  • 3+ years of experience with TypeScript, React, and modern frontend architecture, including production experience with Next.js or similar frameworks and operating backend services using modern web frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Java, or similar.

  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and a commitment to an AI-first engineering culture that leverages these tools to improve software quality, testing, and engineering velocity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with OpenAPI, docs-as-code tooling, or SDK generation.

  • Hands-on experience implementing authentication and authorization systems using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or related identity standards.

  • Demonstrated experience independently driving medium-to-large technical initiatives from definition through production while making sound architectural tradeoffs.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with experience partnering across Product, Design, and Engineering.

  • Experience with Webpack Module Federation or similar micro-frontend architectures.

  • Understanding of runtime dependency sharing, singleton libraries, version compatibility, and independently deployed frontend applications.

  • Experience with enterprise identity standards including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML 2.0, or SCIM.

  • Experience with relationship-based authorization systems such as SpiceDB, OpenFGA, or Zanzibar-inspired architectures.

  • Experience with policy engines such as OPA, or Cedar.

  • Familiarity with identity verification, fraud prevention, KYC/AML, or regulated identity systems.

  • Working knowledge of NIST 800-63 IAL/AAL guidelines.

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails

  • Experience with Java (Spring Boot or similar)

  • Experience with PostgreSQL.

  • Experience performing feature-flag-driven migrations in customer-facing production systems.

  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform and cloud-native application development.

  • Experience with observability platforms such as OpenTelemetry, Honeycomb, Prometheus, and Sentry.

  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Playwright, Jest, or Cypress.
