About the Role:
The Port Operations Foreman is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of daily port activities, including cargo handling, equipment operation, and labor coordination. This position ensures that all port operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The Port Operations Foreman supervises operators, and dock laborers, coordinating with vessel crews, terminal management, and logistics teams to maintain smooth port operations.
Key Responsibilities:
โ€ข Lead and supervise all daily port operations, including loading and unloading cargo, material handling, and equipment use.
โ€ข Coordinate the work of crane operators, equipment operators, and dock crews to optimize productivity and safety.
โ€ข Inspect and maintain port equipment, including cranes, forklifts, and other material handling systems.
โ€ข Ensure all cargo handling activities comply with company policies, OSHA regulations, and maritime safety standards.
โ€ข Monitor workflow and make operational adjustments to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
โ€ข Train, mentor, and evaluate labor crews on operational procedures and safety practices.
โ€ข Communicate operational updates, challenges, and scheduling issues with vessel personnel, operations managers, and other stakeholders.
โ€ข Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, cargo movement, and safety inspections.
โ€ข Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and safety-first decision-making on all projects.
โ€ข Assist in troubleshooting minor operational or equipment issues to ensure smooth operations.
Crew Leadership and Administrative Duties:
โ€ข Serve as the time leader for assigned crews, ensuring all employee hours are accurately tracked and approved.
โ€ข Develop and manage crew schedules based on vessel arrivals, cargo types, and operational requirements.
โ€ข Oversee payroll submissions for employees under their supervision, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
โ€ข Coordinate with the Operations Manager and HR team regarding staffing needs, attendance, and scheduling changes.
โ€ข Maintain organized records of timekeeping, attendance, and payroll documentation for compliance and reporting purposes.
Required Qualifications:
โ€ข High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
โ€ข Minimum of 3 years of experience in port operations, marine terminal, or logistics management.
โ€ข At least 2 years of supervisory or lead experience managing crews in a port or terminal environment.
โ€ข Strong knowledge of port equipment, material handling, and cargo handling procedures.
โ€ข Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
โ€ข Ability to read and interpret operational plans, cargo manifests, and equipment documentation.
โ€ข Flexible availability to meet the demands of port schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
โ€ข OSHA 30 certification.
โ€ข TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
โ€ข Certifications in rigging, signaling, or crane operation.
โ€ข Experience with bulk materials, breakbulk cargo, or containerized cargo operations.
โ€ข Basic computer skills for reporting and communication tasks.
Physical Requirements:
โ€ข Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks around port equipment and vessels.
โ€ข Ability to climb ladders, access docks, and work at heights as required.
โ€ข Must work outdoors in all weather conditions and around heavy machinery.
โ€ข PPE use required at all times, including hard hat, safety vest, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
