Job description

Perform routine maintenance requirements on a fleet of tugs and barges as directed by the General Manager/Port Engineer. Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Work with company mechanics as needed. 


  • Repair marine equipment on site under adverse conditions at all hours.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
  • Required to work aboard boats and barges using winches and mechanical tools for repairs.
  • Frequently required to board tugs, barges, and ships, at dock or at anchor at all hours.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere Engines.
  • Knowledge of Twin Disc gears, Barge pumps, PTO’s.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical systems and components.
  • Knowledge of the oil transportation and maritime industry.
  • Knowledge of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
  • Work well with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
  • Must be physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
  • Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crewmembers.
  • Must be able to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.
  • Valid state drivers' license and clean driving record.
  • Valid TWIC Card.
  • HAZWOPER training within 90 days of being hired.
  • AED First Aid and CPR training.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Travel may be involved on certain projects.
  • Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)

  • Normal office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Takes communications 24 hours a day, including weekends, concerning vessel maintenance, repair, and operations.
