Port of Entry Inspector - Monticello
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a motivated individual to serve as a Port of Entry Inspector.
About the Role
In this role, you will ensure the safety of Utah's highways and protect our state's infrastructure by monitoring vehicles for compliance with state and federal size and weight laws. This will include selling and issuing size and weight permits, as well as enforcing regulations through the issuance of infractions.
Position Information
Here is some important information about this position:
  • Starting Wage: $23.75
  • FT/PT Status: Full time
  • Working Schedule: This position requires shift work, which includes nights (sometimes working alone), weekends, and holidays.
  • This position requires access to the Utah Criminal Justice Information System (UCJIS). Please note: we will be unable to make an offer of employment to those who can't obtain system access. Any of the following will result in system access denial:
    • Pending cases or open dispositions for deniable offenses (listed below)
      • Felony convictions
      • Misuse of UCJIS information conviction (UCA 53-10-108)
      • Computer Fraud convictions

Key Responsibilities
As an inspector, your primary focus is safety and enforcement. Your daily tasks will include:
  • Vehicle Inspections: Checking the mechanical condition of trucks and equipment.
  • Cargo & Documentation: Inspecting cargo (including tie-downs and hazardous materials placards) and verifying driver logs and paperwork.
  • Enforcement: Identifying violations and taking necessary action, such as issuing citations or placing unsafe vehicles/drivers "out of service."
  • Public Information: Providing drivers with guidance on traffic laws, agency policies, and current road or weather conditions.
  • Administrative Work: Maintaining detailed records, writing reports, and occasionally representing the agency in legal proceedings or grievances.

Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid driver's license.
  • Live within 50 miles of your assigned Port of Entry.
  • Certification: Be CVSA (Part A & B and General Hazardous Materials & Cargo Tanks) certified, OR be able to pass these courses with an 80% score within one year of hire.

  • Physicality: You must be able to do the following regularly: stand, walk on rough surfaces, bend, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs.
