About the job
The Population Health & Wellness Director is a senior-level, client-facing leader responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing population health, wellness, and preventive care strategies for employer clients. This role partners closely with benefits consultants, carriers, vendors, and client leadership to improve employee health outcomes, enhance engagement, and drive measurable cost containment results.
This position blends strategic consulting, program design, data-driven insights, and vendor management, supporting The MJ Companies Employee Benefits Consulting value proposition as a trusted advisor in employee health and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
Population Health Strategy & Program Design
  • Develop and lead comprehensive population health and wellbeing strategies aligned with clients' benefits, workforce demographics, and business objectives
  • Design multi-year population health roadmaps addressing preventive care, chronic condition management, mental health, wellbeing, and health equity
  • Evaluate and recommend evidence-based wellness, disease management, digital health, and point-solution vendors

Client Consulting & Relationship Management
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert for population health and wellness in client strategy meetings, renewals, finalist presentations, and plan design discussions
  • Translate health data and population insights into actionable recommendations for HR, Finance, and executive stakeholders
  • Partner with benefits consulting teams to integrate population health strategies into total rewards and benefits planning

Data Analytics & Outcomes Measurement
  • Analyze population health data including medical and pharmacy claims, biometric results, risk assessments, and engagement metrics
  • Define KPIs and success metrics to assess program effectiveness, ROI, and improvements in health outcomes
  • Create client-facing dashboards, reports, and executive summaries to communicate results and trends

Vendor & Partner Management
  • Manage relationships with wellness, digital health, and population health vendors, including contracting support, performance reviews, and outcomes evaluation
  • Stay current on emerging population health trends, regulatory considerations, and best practices in employer-sponsored benefits
  • Coordinate vendor implementations and ongoing optimization across diverse client populations

Internal Collaboration & Thought Leadership
  • Collaborate with sales, account management, compliance, pharmacy and analytics teams to support prospecting and client retention efforts
  • Develop population health content for marketing, thought leadership, and educational presentations
  • Mentor, manage, and support the Population Health & Wellness team

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Nursing, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, or a related field required
  • Master's degree (MPH, MBA, MHA, or similar) preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in population health, wellness consulting, healthcare analytics, or employee benefits
  • Experience working within an employee benefits brokerage, consulting firm, health plan, or wellness vendor environment preferred

Certifications (Preferred)
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)
  • Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist (CCWS)
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or other clinical credential
  • Health & Productivity Management (HPM) certification

Knowledge & Experience
  • Deep understanding of employer-sponsored health plans, population health management, and wellness program design
  • Strong proficiency in interpreting medical and pharmacy claims data and translating insights into solutions
  • Excellent presentation and executive communication skills
  • Proven ability to influence without authority and partner with diverse stakeholders
  • Project management skills with the ability to manage multiple client initiatives simultaneously

Technical Functions
  1. Population Health Data & Analytics- Interpret and analyze medical, pharmacy, and integrated claims data, evaluate trends, identify cost drivers and modifiable risk factors
  2. Population Health Program Architecture & Design- Design multi-year population health strategies and architect integrated solutions
  3. Vendor Evaluation, Selection & Performance Management- Conduct vetting of wellness, digital health, and population health vendors, lead vendor RFPs, monitor vendor performance
  4. Measurement, ROI & Outcomes Evaluation- Define and measure KPIs and success metrics for population health program
  5. Technology & Data Integration- Oversee data integration between claims data sources, wellness platforms, vendors and administration systems, support use of systems and data tools
  6. Clinical, Regulatory & Compliance Oversight- Ensure programs align with standards, regulations, and requirements
  7. Plan Design & Benefits Alignment- Align population health initiatives with plan design and strategies
  8. Client & Consultant Enablement - Equip benefits consultants with technical population health insights
