Job description

Description Performs clerical and technical work using computer database systems to provide efficient library services to staff and the public. Operates a variety of office machines including computers, copiers, televisions, entertainment consoles, and more. Loads and moves carts.

Accesses all levels of shelving. Charges and discharges library materials. Maintains patron records.

Receives fees and payments and processes materials for circulation. The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

Handles general data management and customer assistance duties by scanning patron cards and desired materials; keying in information into databases; collecting fees and fines as needed; aiding patrons in locating materials; instructing the public on using the card catalog; attending the game room for service and maintenance; and instructing the computer lab on printing. Maintains library appearance and programs by applying security strips; stamping library name on materials; applying bar codes; placing furniture in new areas as needed; shelving books properly; shifting materials to optimize displays that aid customers; operating electronic equipment; providing refreshments using a popcorn machine; overseeing arts and crafts; and providing information to customers both in the library and in public. Creates new programs and work environment improvement ideas by engaging in brainstorming and creative tasks; assisting in creating special event menus; locating materials for special activities; creating costumes for special events; and transporting supplies to event sites when off premises.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES Performs additional duties as assigned. Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED supplemented by six months to one year of post-secondary study or training: e.g. vocational, business, technical school; and up to one year of experience

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above Certifications/Licenses Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria Job Knowledge Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems. Reading Intermediate: Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses. Writing Basic: Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Math Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Communication Skills Decisions regarding interpretation of existing policies may be made. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.

Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas. Independence and Decision-Making Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices.

The assignment is usually reviewed frequently. Technical Skills Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Fiscal Responsibilities No budgetary/fiscal responsibility.

Supervisory Responsibilities No responsibility for direction or supervision of others. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is sedentary in nature, requiring occasional light physical exertion. Requires adequate vision, hearing and talking to use a computer, telephone and communicating effectively with others.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time. Regular and predictable attendance is expected. May frequently experience changes of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and working closely with others as part of a team.

May occasionally experience time pressure, emergency situations, irregular work schedule/overtime, tedious or exacting work, noisy/distracting environment, and patrons behaving inappropriately requiring police assistance. MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE Typically requires use of standard office equipment, including computer and related hardware and software; popcorn machine, television and DVD player; and any other equipment as appropriate or required. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in a public library, where there is rare exposure to communicable diseases and physical danger or abuse.

The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task; and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
