How much do polymer simulation jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for polymer simulation in California is $66,716.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,400.00 and $78,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in polymer simulation roles?

Professionals in polymer simulation often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling complex molecular structures and predicting material properties under various conditions. Keeping up with advances in simulation software and computational methods is essential, as the field evolves rapidly. Additionally, effective collaboration with experimental chemists and materials scientists is key, as simulation results often inform or validate laboratory findings. Balancing computational resources with project deadlines can also be a regular hurdle in both academic and industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Polymer Simulation Specialist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Polymer Simulation Specialist, you need a solid background in polymer science, computational modeling, and a relevant advanced degree such as a master's or PhD in materials science, chemistry, or chemical engineering. Proficiency in simulation software like LAMMPS, GROMACS, or Materials Studio, plus programming skills in Python or MATLAB, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies enable accurate modeling, effective collaboration with research teams, and the development of innovative polymer materials.

What is the difference between Polymer Simulation vs Polymer Engineer?

AspectPolymer SimulationPolymer Engineer
Required CredentialsDegree in materials science, chemical engineering, or related field; knowledge of simulation softwareDegree in chemical, materials science, or polymer engineering; practical experience in polymer processing
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, using computer modeling and simulation toolsLaboratories, manufacturing plants, or R&D facilities involving hands-on work
Industry UsageUsed in research, product development, and testing of polymer propertiesInvolved in designing, developing, and optimizing polymer products and processes

Polymer Simulation focuses on modeling and predicting polymer behavior through computer simulations, while Polymer Engineers work directly with polymer materials in practical applications. Both roles require a strong background in polymer science but differ in their approach—one is more theoretical and software-based, the other hands-on and process-oriented.

What is polymer simulation?

Polymer simulation is the use of computational models and methods to study the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of polymers at the molecular or macroscopic level. These simulations help scientists predict how polymers behave under different conditions, design new materials, and understand fundamental processes such as polymerization or molecular interactions. Techniques commonly used include molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, and coarse-grained modeling. Polymer simulation is valuable in materials science, chemistry, engineering, and related fields.

Job description

Company Overview
Hybron is an advanced manufacturing company that is building lightweight composites at mass production scale. At Hybron, we have pioneered a new composites manufacturing process that enables complex, high performance composite parts to be produced 10-100 times faster than traditional manufacturing, at a fraction of the cost.
We recently closed an oversubscribed $25M seed round, are backed by the Northrop Grumman Technology Accelerator, and are rapidly growing to commercialize and mass produce composite products at a scale never seen before. Our current focus is applying our proprietary process to composite artillery shells, solid rocket motor nozzles, gas turbine engine components, and airframes.
If you want to join a rapidly growing company working on cutting edge composites technology while building capabilities for the warfighter and reshoring U.S. manufacturing, then we want to speak with you.
About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person role at our El Segundo pilot facility. As you will be working at an early-stage deep tech startup, this role will span many different tasks. You will need to be a self-starter and be adaptable to performing many different jobs. Along with these high expectations comes the opportunity to significantly influence the product development, strategy, and trajectory of a fast-growing startup company. Your work will tangibly impact our company and the composites industry, and you will be able to make rapid professional gains in an environment that encourages growth and innovation.
This role involves leading the end-to-end development and scaled manufacturing of high-performance composite products. You will be responsible for taking innovative concepts, designing products, manufacturing first articles, proving performance, and scaling manufacturing. As the owner of the product lifecycle, you will oversee design for manufacturing, material selection, layup optimization, and tooling integration.
Working in a high-growth company, you will be wearing many hats: project management, requirements identification, manufacturing design, stress and performance design, supply chain and vendor management, process optimization, continuous improvement, quality inspection, customer engagement, and more.
Growth Opportunity and Targets
As you grow with Hybron, your responsibilities are expected to shift and evolve. Our hope is that you will be able to grow into the following responsibilities:
  • Grow and lead an engineering team for developing and deploying our manufacturing capabilities in different applications
  • Own product development and engineering on one or several products at Hybron
  • Assist with technical business development efforts
  • Identify and execute on developing/integrating strategic technological capabilities
  • Spearhead, oversee, and deliver on large technology development initiatives

What we're looking for
  • Must be a US Person pursuant to the EAR and the ITAR definitions
  • Ability to work in-person at our facility in El Segundo
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or science field (Composites,
  • Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials Science, Polymer Science, etc.)
  • 4+ years of experience working with fiber-reinforced polymer composites materials, with specific experience in design and manufacturing
  • Strong experience with CAD and GD&T
  • Proven ownership in product development, especially in composites-related applications
  • Proven experience with rapid prototyping and driving product maturity while managing technical risk
  • Demonstrated proof of having scaled manufacturing production (especially in composites)
