Chemical Engineer

For 50 years, San Antonio Shoemakers, a San Antonio, Texas based company, has developed a reputation as a premier American manufacturer of high quality footwear. SAS has an opening for a Chemical Engineer who specializes in EVA rubber, SBR, TPU, PEBA and/or polyurethane (PU) formulations.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Optimize PU resin/foam formulations to meet target specifications as well as help design and optimize EVA foam compounds.
  • Lead trials of new formulations throughout the design and development process all the way to efficient manufacturing.
  • Evaluate new raw materials, additives, fillers, etc., to improve product performance and reduce costs.
  • Evaluate and modify processing methods including compounding, extrusion, injection molding, and curing/foaming processes.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to material performance and equipment issues in manufacturing.
  • Formulate bonding agents, adhesives, and coatings to ensure structural integrity.
  • Conduct physical and chemical property testing on materials.
  • Ensure all processes comply with international safety and environmental regulations.
  • Support continuous improvement of plant operations and productions workflows.
  • Manage and oversee trial runs throughout manufacturing process.
  • Other duties as assigned


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in rubber/polymer compounding, specifically with EVA, SBR, PEBA and PU, ideally within footwear, automotive, or industrial manufacturing
  • Familiarity with material testing methods (tensile strength, hardness, etc.)
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, domestically and internationally
  • Experience working with product development teams
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in retail management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
